Ford went back to full frame construction in 1972 for their mid-size cars. This explains the wide sill. The frame slots up into the body, or at least it does on my '72 Torino. The front seat is moved back to the passenger's foot well area. The flat area behind the seat is where the rear seat bottom goes. Two and four doors use the same floor pans. Wagons and Rancheros are different.
Well I contacted the museum after we reached a consensus in this thread & received a reply from their assistant curator this afternoon. I replied & presented him with the details & pics that everyone helped figure out here(especially Trent!), and almost immediately received this reply:
"Wow, that is interesting. I imagine you are correct Pete, so I will see where the former director and curator got their info when they put the Daisy Track exhibit together back in 2004.
Thanks for contacting us, and I will keep you posted as to whether we change our sign. We always appreciate it when a visitor ‘fixes’ a mistake on our part."
