I've been stuck in the '80s, car-wise, but now have an '04 Saab 9-5. Yes, I'm inching toward automotive modernity--change is hard.

The 9-5 has some new-fangled socket for a thing that tells me stuff. And there's another new-fangled thing I need to tell the car to do stuff, sometimes for seemingly dumb reasons (like when I install certain headlight components).

  • In other words, what's the preferred OBD tool to pull codes?

  • And is there an easy button for Tech2? I did some research and it seems there are Chinese knockoffs, and I need a Saab-specific card. But also some ancient version of Windows to make it work? Is there an easier way? Am I looking at buying an old computer, too?
