I’ve got these cheap eBay tail lights for the Miata. I popped the lenses off and painted them. They don’t look any worse than original, but I could definitely make them look better with some plastic surgery (pun intended).

i want to fill in and make the black outer ring (cheap plastic) smooth. I also need to fill in the strange gap near the reverse lights. I have no idea what to fill it with so that it would have a stable, solid, sandable structure to it. Bondo has cracked on me before when applied too thick.

The outer black ring can be sealed up with a black adhesive when fitting the lenses and it should look good. As for the notches, those will have to be glassed-in with a thin layer of bondo on top.

You can fill the cavity with epoxy or poly resin.  Mix up some 2-part epoxy resin and mix in powdered microfiber until its about like thick peanut butter.  No need to make it super pretty  or over fill it.  Just stuff in enough to take up most of the space.  Then you can bondo over the epoxy to make it look sexy.

I've had some great success with jb plastic weld lately, so if you were to fill the cavity with some foam, put a thin strip of slightly thick plastic to form over the top, you should be fine to plastic weld it in there.  Clean it up with a Dremel and sandpaper before painting.

Alternatively, you could also truly plastic weld it, but that's a lot harder to get a good, even finish around a border like that.

i just realized you think I’m putting the lenses back on. I am not. Those lenses were junk from China. Probably could’ve sealed them up but they broke anyways upon removal (even with a lot of heat and patience.)

maybe I’ll fill the black ring in with a caulking and then bondo over that?
