My first project car is still in a certain junkyard last I checked and I certainly didn't learn my lesson...
Actually I bought another of the exact same car. That's how much I didn't learn.
RE: a Z car- there's a rumor that a certain car magazine did an LS swap into one, and then even tried a drifting event with it....
It's been an interesting read.
Buy a Mustang GT and shamelessly copy ChrisFix's build, which he has kindly explained in great detail via his "how to" videos. It's a cheap car, great daily driver, and unlimited aftermarket. It's been proven already that a Mustang will go sideways with minimal modification, no IRS needed.
Regular cab short bed fullsize truck. Seriously the easy button. Wheelbase is long enough and V8s are the norm.
G35/350Z. Used diffs to weld are a dime-a-dozen, spare parts are everywhere, SOP for event prep is boost rear tire pressure and top off oil, and when he wants to play with more angle GKTech sells a shockingly inexpensive yet quite sturdy angle kit to fit his budget. There's a reason why everyone's using them.

Call me when you get a chance. If the boy is worthy I might have a hell of a car for him.

Will do!
Edit: you posted early. If you’re awake, I can call you on my way to work, like 7:15 or so? I won’t unless you post here though

E46s are what all the cool kidz are drifting yo these days. You can buy a decent one for $3000-$3500 and have buckage left over for deferred maintenance, a lot of which you'd be touching to build a drift car anyway.
That being said, it's hard enough to keep the ass end behind the front in a stock 350Z, so that's a good start too. But you're more likely to find an adult-owned non-thrashed E46 in that price range than you are a Zed.

Where would I find this ChrisFix build video stuff?
Asking for a friend....
I know, the Tube of You...I found them, looks like it was a 4.6L 'stang, wish it were the 5 oh. Well, I mean, my friend would wish it were.
Where are you located? Arent Nissan hardbodies just useful 240s?
Speaking of 240s, anybody mention Volvos yet?

That's the beauty isn't it. No one will touch a 4.6 because it's "slow" and "solid axle can't handle". Chris makes it work with coilovers and a 10 horsepower increase.

I agree with SN95, but I say go for a 96-98 Cobra instead for realistically the same price.

My nephew drifts the Flying Tigers LS400 from the Challenge a few years ago. It seems to work pretty well; though it is automatic. He built a manual control box for the transmission.
Holy E36 M3 guys. This conversation about teens, LS400 and SN95 Mustangs. My friend asks you all to stop....

He’s in Michigan.
I mentioned Volvos to him. I don’t think he took me seriously.
Start them off right- trial by fire. Give me $500 and I'll give them a titled Merkur shell, the lowest quality spare I have of each component, and the use of my lift for a long weekend.

People still read magazines?
This many posts about drifting and not a single suggestion of the 240SX? Y'all are slipping.
It has the handling neutrality of a Miata with an extra bit of wheelbase to make it super easy to hang the ass out forever.
(mini trucks btw are awful to drift)

That's the truth. My dream of a V8-powered Sileighty budget build may forever be a dream.
