Paul/ huckleberry. I know y'all have an aversion to Corvettes. I'm the same way. Mysportsclubs voice is an old air-cooled 911 that I'm restoring. But picking up this cheap C4 Corvette for the challenge has kind of changed my attitude towards the car. I too think of them as being big and cumbersome. And stock trim they are. But they're only a 96 inch wheelbase with a wide 70 plus inches track. The engine is set back behind the front axle Centerline. The cars seem so big because although only 96 inch wheelbase they have overhang that makes them 178 inches long. We're in the process of cutting off that crappy body work. I've been impressed with how stiff the chassis are and the IRS suspension with itsforged aluminum pieces is actually quite competent.
While a V8 Mazda is certainly and enticing little package consider this: think about stripping down AC4 of all the plastic Corvette crap. Slipping a LS motor in a 5-6 speed on it. You can buy a replica C2 Corvette roadster body for about 5 grand. Crunch the numbers. I'm sure you could come up with a unique Cobra Killer C2 Corvette Roadster 2500 lb replica for under 20 grand. And it wouldn't be something you see everyday. Just a thought

Why the factory ECM? (I am assuming that's a GM factory ECM). Why not Megasquirt PnP?
I like the 4.8L, probably for the same reasons you do. (Oversquare, high revving, low price). Not sure about the iron block (weight). Is it worth building a 4.8L from an alum block? (Seems backwards)
Why the Explorer diff? How about the FM OS Giken Super Lock LSD? Costs more, but direct bolt-in, track proven, and warranted.
The OE computer works very well. It's easily reprogrammed and a VERY known commodity. I would use a Drive By Cable computer and throttle valve. For flexibility and reliability.
The Ford 8.8 is a known swap, easy and extremely reliable. A higher numerical gear will still be prone to damage from the V8 torque. The 8.8 is designed for that torque.
4.8L responds well to a modest cam and open exhaust plus you aren't blowing the tires off on every throttle input.
