Marvel Mystery Oil soak should only help not hurt. Rings can stick, valves and seats can surface rust.

I sold a race engine to a guy. First thing they did after uncrating was a compression check. Got a call MF-in' me that bad compression. Did you run it yet? No. Get back to me after running it. He called later saying compression was spec just as I had documented it. This engine had only sat a few months in my cold garage before shipping. Same w/ any JY engine or after sitting for unknown times.

IMO, MMO is a worthy step. If compression improves w/ still no fire get back to trouble shooting. You will have eliminated poor compression as a factor.

Curious now as to what the culprit(s) were.

After mmo soaking 1 and 4, 1 was up to 50psi and 4 was up to 75.  So i figured start spinning it over to keep freeing things up, recleaned the plugs, and it finally fired and started running decent.  Haven't touched the carb from the base settings i had it at.  But now it runs, so i can start tuning from there.

Nt much better than finally getting them to run after being out of comission.

I'd be interested in hearing how much the compression numbers come up after you get to the point that it starts right off every time.

How strange that it wouldn't fire on two cylinders, I guess there wasnt enough kick to spin it till it could catch.

I'll do a compression test after a bit to see what running did to the numbers.  Last night before bed, after it cooled off, 2 pumps of the accelerator and it fires right up.

next steps are fabricate a breather box because oil vapor flinging around is bad, then dial in the timing with the light, hook up alternator(anyone have wiring diagram for alternator plug for a 76 bus besides big fatty goes to battery?), make exhaust so I don't go deaf, and go through the steps of tuning the carb.  I can make a holley WORK, this is not a holley.  I'm kinda sick of reading vw places that sell dual carb kits saying "the single intake the other guys sell is junk because the air and fuel don't get hot enough before they enter the engine" instead of "this is what the screws on the dgev do, here's how you turn them when X happens"

There are other minor things, like throttle cable and brackets.  My alligator clipped wire to hand throttle works fine for test running, but i have the beefy throttle cable off the Wartburg and my 10-32 heims came yesterday to get it together.

This help? May be a little broad, but I seem to remember it had good info buried in it.

Half the conversion intake came with the engine, which was injected and missing parts and ecm
