Hello braintrust, I need some help with this. Car is US speck but on different continent. Looking for some ideas to point them in the right direction before going to very expensive dealer.

Car starts and runs well with no check engine light. Shifts through all the gears normally.

Description of issue:

1) Speedometer does not read above 45mph--though the car feels like it is going faster than  45

2) With foot off the pedal while driving the Rev counter drops to 0. Engine does not die. Foot back on gas rev counter shoots back up to where it needs to be.

3) I am told brake feels funny--not much initial bite but as you increase pressure you get full braking-- almost like brake assist kicks in.

4) On an a recent incident on a gravel road the driver heard beeping of VSC but cannot say for sure if he felt the computer braking individual wheels to help get the car under control.

What are the probable causes? I'm thinking some kind of sensor/speed sensor. Help me point them in the right direction. Thanks.

Seems like a computer/gauge issue to me. Possibly ABS related. Those symptoms seems unrelated mechanically but could be related through a module. Weird stuff, I personally haven’t heard of something like this before.

It sounds like the car is driven on not so smooth roads regularly. Something could have let go due to vibration. It could also be a ground or connector issue

Is this a regular Highlander or a Hybrid Highlander?

If just regular, is it a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder?

Alll wheel drive or just front wheel drive?

I'd start by looking closely at the grounds, especially related to the guage cluster. Where does the speedo measure speed from? That would be my first place to look.

measure voltage  at different engine RPM's. Maybe even during a drive.  An over charging alternator can make a lot of screwy problems occur.

Then disconnect the battery, drink a beer and reconnect. Might not fix anything....but ....beer.

Explain how the OP is going to remotely drink a beer? Car is on different continent than Hotchocolate.

The trick is to get US-spec beer.  But you do have to be on the same continent as your beer.

I did something wrong.i tried to quote and add text but lost the text... Third time now.

Thanks for all the ideas and the laugh.

The car deals with less than smooth roads. Check the grounds is probably the cheapest place to start.

It is a V6. They don't know if it AWD or not. I will ask them to check again.

We disconnected/reconnected the battery, nothing changed. Only more issues. Now the radio will not work. Only after that incident was I reminded that there are devices to prevent that argh!!!

Left field thought could it be ignition related?

I will relay what has been shared and update with any new info. In the interim if there are any more ideas, please share them.
