I have a '99 M3 convertible and I love it. There are a lot of lower miles e36 cars around. Much easier to find than the coupe.
I also have an '01 Volvo C70 with a turbo and manual. Nowhere near the awesome car that the M3 is, but for 20% of the money it's hard to argue. It makes gobs of power, but feels like what it is: a Swedish Chevrolet.

The Saab is a great value. I've put 45K trouble free kms on mine. It was overpriced for what it was new but as I've mentioned before I paid 9100 CAD with 69K km on the clock. Hard to beat.

Edit: nvm http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?zip=92555&endYear=2016&vehicleStyleCodes=CONVERT&modelCode1=XKR&showcaseOwnerId=0&startYear=1981&makeCode1=JAG&searchRadius=100&mmt=%5BJAG%5BXKR%5B%5D%5D%5B%5D%5D&listingId=375633518&Log=0
That's a different one. The one I had saved seems to have been sold. That one there has the Silverstone package wheels that I'd prefer.

Yes of course, we live in SoCal
I lived in Sandy Eggo for a few years without A/C, heck I lived in Sacramento without it in the car for a long time, but I was not chauffeuring kids around then.

I live north of San Diego and about 60 miles east of any water. It gets berkeleying hot!
I'd say go with Mustang Convertible or Saab 9-3..
