Too Much Electric-Car Torque: Tesla Model S P85D Breaks Dynamometer (Video)

"The Model S P85D is rated by Tesla at 691 horsepower, but the carmaker won't publish an official torque figure.

In another dyno test, though, a P85D registered 864 lb-ft--and without breaking a thing."

Impressive, I wonder why they were hiding that number? That's a bragworthy amount of torque even by EV standards.

In reply to Xceler8x:

Either a faulty part or they put it on a dyno that wasn't specified to hold that much torque. Nothing unusual to see here, move along.

FWIW, been there, done that. Some dyno's also have speed restrictions on them as well.

I have no idea. Maybe an insurance thing? Maybe it's inconsistent and therefore not worth mentioning across the entire line?

Probably because they are smart engineers, and know that 'torque', by itself, is a pretty meaningless number when it comes to accelerating a car. Most electric motors put out max torque at zero RPM. Zero RPM means zero HP no matter the torque.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I generate 2000 ft-lbs of torque with a 10 foot bar. I cannot use that same 10 foot bar to move a 3000 lb car down the 1/4 mile in 10 seconds.

Plus, "Horsepower sells cars, something something something."

I liked the ine i drove. Only complaints we're traction and stability not defeatable and needed more rear bar. Otherwise kick ass car.
