You DID say snow traction wasn't an issue :)
I have a set of Michelin all-seasons on the M5. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus. Brutally expensive in M5 sizes and not really applicable for snow use. At least, not in the 275/35ZR18 size that is so common on Miatas.
Well, I'm trying not to have to report back how well they're doing in snow . According to the TR reviews, they're OK-ish in snow (IIRC they've got the highest ratings amongst the three tires I listed) but we're still talking Miata on three seasons in the snow...
Hopefully this is on topic enough. Anyone have any experience with these tires mentioned for a HPDE? This would be for a beginner driver. I just don't want them to chunk their tires. They would like to avoid getting a separate set of wheels and tires when they are just starting out. Thanks.
I've seen the ASTs run on track without chunking or any other problems other than the expected wear. That's on a Miata, heavier cars may be different.
I've used the car for HPDEs with the Michelins on. First time that my choice of tire and the tired-ish suspension held me back on the track, and I'm not exactly a driving god. Heck, I'm not even a driving demi-god.
I think you'd be OK for an HPDE day or two but the tires will be in pretty bad shape afterwards. As soon as I figured out what wheels I'd be putting on the car I'll stick some more track-oriented rubber on and just use the Michelins for regular street driving.
I ran flat out at Michigan Speedway in the Miata on Kumho ASXs and they were good.It was fun watching people come over to the car and see my stock motor and all season tires. Some of them just need to take a driver's school.
