My 06 GTi with DSG occasionally will start from a quick stop in second gear and then immediately dowshift to first, causing a momentary delay and a big jerk, even if I manually select first gear. Dealer said this was normal operation. Upon looking through the TSBs I found this gem:

TSB said: Complaint: Delay when accelerating from a stop... ...after heavy braking to a stop and accelerating immediately (within 1 second). i.s. when driving up to a Yield sign then accelerating. Cause: 1st, and reverse gears on on one shaft. 2nd gear is on the other shaft. the DSG cannot determine whether the vehicle will be driven forwards or backwards. Therefore, the gearbox has mechanically preselected reverse gear and 2nd gear. DSG starts out in 2nd gear and then changes into 1st gear during acceleration phase. Initial acceleration in 2nd gear could be perceived as inadequate. Corrective Action: No action required. Operating as designed.

Seriously? The programmed it to think that after a quick stop I'm more likely to go backwards than forwards in first gear?

You abdicate responsibility for what your car does, you're gonna have to put up with a glitch or two. There are lots of cars with automatics that don't shift correctly under stress.

Wouldn't you move the shift lever to put it in reverse? That seems like a really poor design. Who would really complain that it takes a half of a second to select reverse? No one, but to solve that fictional problem they designed the car to start off in 2nd gear then downshift?

If it didn't do this, you'd probably be complaining that it jerked when you tried to back up after stopping to parallel park. Which would be a lot worse, I think. Although, doesn't the thing have enough torque that they could just leave it in second?

Of course, if you could be bothered to learn how, you could just buy a manual and select the gear yourself .

I drove both manual and DSG GTis before I bought mine. The GTi is, IMO, much better with the DSG. I like this trans 1000x better than a manual 99.9% of the time. The only things it does that piss me off are that occasional second gear start and the fact that it'll shift at redline even in manual mode (I usually shift before then, there's no power past 6k RPM). Although I can fix the latter with the REVO DSG software, and get faster shifts and stuff in the process.

And, yes, it seems to me that I'd be inclined to move the shift lever to reverse if I intended to go backwards. It doesn't jerk or have any delay going quickly into reverse anyways, so I'm not quite sure what this functionality was meant to do.

does seem odd that it thinks you are about to engage reverse.... Why not park itself in 1st and keep reverse and 2nd preselected?
