A picture wasn't enough. I found bits of clutch as I attempted to disconnect the transmission, and luckily the flywheel looks practically unused and is as flat as they used to think the earth was.

Wow, how did the material get worn down lower than the rivets without them cutting channels in the flywheel and pressure plate?

In reply to GameboyRMH:

The pressure plate is going in the trash. Hadn't really checked yet. The flywheel is immaculate. You can see fiber from the clutch in the bottom of the hosing.

Ahh, the famous "birds nest" clutch. Clutch is setup so it will not gouge but will disintegrate as it slips with some material left. It happens!

Once you smell it, you can diagnose a bad clutch from 40 feet.

I believe that clutch does not owe you anything, you got every mile out of it.

YAY! it's out!

Boo, on the choice of drinks.

Now while it is out, replace the rubber plugs at the shifter with some cup plugs to avoid losing the trans later on.

I'd buy Schlafly, but the helper gets choice in drink.

I'm more worried about the bushing to keep the stick from doing the wiggle. Tell me more about this rubber E36 M3 I need.

Looks like the clutch that exploded on me at the dragstrip.

It never slipped, but it came apart when I was driving home. Parts of the friction surface from over here got stuck under the disk way over there and long story short, the clutch would not disengage. And it vibrated HORRIBLY.

(But I drove it home.)

The clutch that came off my AE92 donor car was cracked across 2 of the 4 "spokes" that held the friction material part to the sprung center section. But the car had so many different clunks and vibrations from the broken engine mounts, fuel pressure/EFI problems, 2 missing lugs next to each other (!) and crash damage I can't be sure if it was causing any problems.

Is that one of those low-inertia clutches? It lets the engine rev freely.

Regardless of pressure from the plate.
