What if it were optimized for the quarter mile...would it be a drag queen?

new platform, from an unkown brand, with less displacement. It's impressive.

Forged and built motor is just a built motor. Who cares where the block came from.

Weren't IMSA BMW M10s making 1500 Hp in qualifying trim and 1200 in endurance race trim in the 80s. That was with a basically stock bottom end.

If it's in a Veloster, it's still front-wheel-drive. I've left that behind.

I don't know what I was thinking. Of course, an owner built 500whp 1.6 is obviously completely boring and stupid. Factory backed racing cars are much better.

I'll be sure to keep this in mind from now on. This is why we can't have nice things. People want to just poo on everything.

Having briefly owned an original Excel I'm impressed.

I'm so sorry Bob, and you're right. Come on guys, let's get out the pooper scoopers I'm quite certain that car is quite impressive with big enough drag slicks. Any idea what transmission bolts to that 1.6 that can stand up to the torque of this mini-monster?

Wow... what's been done to that thing?

It's been upgraded so that it doesn't exceed 200lbft of torque until 5000 rpm.

I still think it's cool.

pretty obviously a huge turbo if you look at the graph.

pretty obviously compensating for a tiny engine.

Hey I was impressed. I was feeling pretty good about the 350ish WHP the MS3 was pushing until I saw that.

I have a thing for cars that make you feel like you pushed both the NOS buttons at the same time after the VTEC kicked in (yo!) though.

Is it still couple to the stock trans?

As far as I know, it's attached to the stock trans with a diff installed.

I still have trouble not correlating modern Hyundai with my grandmothers 1987 Excel. It was a boring car before I knew what a boring car was.

An AWD turbo Veloster would probably get me in a showroom though.

I don't like the Veloster styling at all. Love the seats though.

I got to drive one and was more annoyed than impressed. It has a lot of potential, but in my very humble opinion, the interior ergonomics are all sorts of wrong. It felt more cramped than a miata, had poor sight lines behind you, and I did not enjoy the steering (lack of) feedback at all.

I really wanted to love it. I really did.

That's why if I ever buy one of those drivetrains it'll be in the Forte5 or Elantra Sport. They're just better cars. Also. the damn thing will get tuned the day I bring it home because holy throttle lag.

I don't like any of Hyundai's modern styling. Everything looks like a melting bucktoothed catfish. I remember the press going on about how gorgeous the new Sonatas were when they came out in '10-ish and going "Are they looking at the same car?". The best-looking car they had was the first-gen Genesis and then they went and ruined that when they restyled it. Very weird surfacing, makes Chris Bangle cars looks great.

And now you understand why I tend to like the Kia's better. Same car, just better clothes.
