How does the Aussie Saloon series handle this type of thing? Is the Aussie series a "run what cha brung" kind of thing or do they regulate the cars as closely as NASCAR?
This came up in a prior thread, and according to the poster, who said he was an official, it's tightly regulated. However, it still makes for enjoyable viewing! Talk about hungry, aggressive drivers on very interesting tracks and street circuits!
The latest thing. NASCAR doesn't like the two car draft that occurred Sat. nite. Too fast, so they want to tweak the cars cooling sytems so that the pushing car overheats.
One thing that does amaze me is the engines. How they can run a two valve, single cam, pushrod engine to such high rpm. 8600 in qualifying and there were reports of well over 9K on Sat.

They did the tweaking to the oil and water cooling systems BEFORE Sat night's race. I'm sure there'll be more "tweaking".
Yes, the engines ARE interesting; most of the teams have had valvetrain dynos so at least that part of the engine wouldn't fly apart. Actually, CarCraft mag did a build up of a Ford 289, IIRC, that had a 9600rpm redline, and that was back in the early 90s.
One thing I've never seen, which I'd like to, is the valve actuator on 18k rpm F1 engine. As well as the area around the wrist pin.
The biggest thing they do is run a 1/2"-9/16" diameter pushrod with a hair diameter oiling hole through it. Then they spring it with the longest and strongest spring with cooling jets aimed at the springs. The resistance to bending far outweighs the weight, which is about ziltch in the overall scope of things.

I remember watching the telemetry from a Cup car a while ago, and I believe it was phoenix? the revs got up to 10,000
anyway, tweaking the cooling system so that the following car overheats, that just seems a bit shady to me. "because you are doing so well, we are going to compromise the cooling on your car and risk the destruction of your finely tuned race engine". well done Nascar, well done

I believe the most recent issue of F1 Racing has a link to an article outlining one of the most recent Toyota F1 engines, I do believe the engine they looked at was the last year of the 3.0L V10 rather than one of the newer 2.4L V8s. it's a pay-to-see, but if you're the engineering type or want to try your hand at designing engine parts, it might be worth it just to skim off a thin layer of awesome for your own designs (as long as they were one-off, otherwise Toyota might be a bit mad...)

The Aussie series uses more or less spec cars. It is pretty much NASCAR down under except on road coarses.
Pro Stock, Funny car, and Top Fuel are all rev limited to 10k.
9/16ths to 1/2" pushrods boggle the mind. And those strong vlalve springs, what do the cam lobes look like after a race? OTOH, what metal is the cam made of?
I'll have to check out the current issue of F1 magazine.

Seems no more gimmicky than a button that adds 80 hp or a wing that lays down to add 20kph on the top end.
I love F1, but I don't understand the desire to destroy the skill/improve the "show," for the less-than-casual fans.
F1 is already the most watched event in the world.
I can't until Ecclestone is no longer in charge.

true, it does seem like a gimick, but there's a difference between a gimick that improves performance and a gimick that intentionally risks damaging/destroying what very well may be THE most advanced/finely tuned example of a pushrod V8 just to "even out" the field. it would make much more sense to hand out individual handicaps based on finishing position, aka in the 1st race, everyone starts their car out as-is, and based on who wins, in the 2nd race weekend, certain handicaps are handed out (a restrictor plate that is slightly smaller than an unrestricted FI carb, or a restrictor plate slightly smaller than everyone else, or even a set of smaller venturis if they go to a IRTB-style EFI, or just throw weight at the car like the BTCC does). that should work better and make more sense than screwing everybody over equally, which is probably why they won't do it
Sealed spec series. Get a bunch of Tauruses and Impalas and Camrys and whatever else from Hertz or Avis, and put the keys in a bowl, and let em go for it. I'd probably buy a ticket to that mess.

I drive a Toyota daily, I love my car.
I don't watch Nascar, it's bloody boring and I have all my teeth.
