Don't expect to find a lot of hot video of Hopkirk sliding around To many people, he's synonymous with Minis and the Monte Carlo.

I seem to recall Loeb upsetting a few people by being faster in his FWD Saxo than the big dog AWD WRC cars on one rally. It was a tarmac rally of course. That would have been right around 2000 or so.

I can't imagine too many (top) drivers starting in RWD nowadays. Not saying that it's rare, but I'm assuming that the kid starting out in a 106 or a Clio is of a different subset than the kid starting out in, say, a Starlet.

Don't most countries prevent you from starting out in anything larger than a certain displacement? We're a little behind the times in the US, we only recently decided that, hmm, maybe someone shouldn't go out in a turbo AWD car on their first rally. (And not all sanctioning bodies, either)

That's probably about the time they changed the spec from a 2 liter engine to a 1600cc... I'm a bit fuzzy on it and hadn't ever been able to find much info in the storm of WRC! WRC! WRC! but something tells me that the 2000cc minicars beating up on WRCars was the reason for the change.

And then there's the year a 1600cc, 8 valve Skoda took 3rd at Monte Carlo...

Finally got around to watching this.

GeeZUSSS.

For me, the driving (specifically in the first half of the clip) seems more impressive than that of the full-blown WRC cars on tarmac. That is insanely fast driving in tight quarters. I can't even process it.

The car is badass and is set up incredibly. Serious tires/grip on that thing. Very, very cool.
