Regarding the mystery of using aluminum, you have to separate the two facts, that aluminum is not magnetic, AND that it conducts electricity.

If you put a changing magnetic field near aluminum, the field will induce current flow in the aluminum (because it's conductive) and that generates its own magnetic field. Due to physics, that field is opposite the field applied, so the aluminum wants to move away (think of putting two magnet north poles together). So while aluminum won't stick to a magnet, it will act magnetic if there's enough current running through it to generate a field. You could even use a lump of carbon fiber and accomplish the same thing...
