I'm going North to visit my nephew this weekend. He mentioned that his girlfriend's car (2004 Honda Accord, 4 cyl 5 speed) is showing a Check Engine Light.
Do I need a code scanner or is this car one of those that will reveal its codes with some combo of key position and blinking dash lights?
Once again, it would be great if we could edit thread titles...
Post '96- need a scanner. Generic OBD will tell you what is lighting the light.
Yup. OBD-II. Code scanner. Even the cheap (sub $100) units will retrieve and allow you to clear the codes. A little googling and you should have a pretty good idea of what's wrong and how to fix it.

Just tell him to go to Autozone and have them scan it FO FREE. Google the code and go from there.

Just don't listen to them if they try to sell you a part to fix it. Take the code and run!

That's an option, but as someone with an aging fleet of OBD-II cars, I can easily justify buying one.
