Japanese automakers Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi said Thursday they are ending talks on business integration. Nissan Chief Executive Makoto Uchida said the talks had changed focus from setting up a joint holding company to making Nissan into a subsidiary of Honda. Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Corp. announced in December that they were going to hold talks to set up a joint holding company. Mitsubishi Motors Corp. had said it was considering joining that group.

i read that Nissan's ego got in the way but when I read the reason for it, i thought for once Nissan was actually doing the right thing...

Honda, according to the report, thought that Nissan’s plans to cut jobs were too vague and too slow. Specifically, Reuters says that “Nissan’s pride and insufficient alarm about its predicament” helped sour Honda on the whole idea.

To make things worse, Nissan execs reportedly didn’t seem to want to fully close any plants or reduce its EV ambitions, including a new EV facility on the Japanese island of Kyushu. The report implies that the continued pursuit of Kyushu put a bad taste in the mouth of Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe. Why would Nissan be averse to closing plants or touching Kyushi?

Nissan's insistence on protecting its workers and keeping plants open seems like nobile things to do..  Shame on Honda for not seeing the production capacity as an opportunity to retool, increase production, etc.

Wonder what the next step for Nissan is.

The most surprising thing to me in this saga was to read in that link that Nissan still has an operating profit, though greatly diminished.  From the article:

"Japan's Nissan posted a 78% fall in third-quarter operating profit to 31.1 billion yen ($201.84 million)."

Nissan's fall is ironic for those of us who read this book 35+ years ago:

For those who haven't, it's a contrast between the fortunes of Ford and Nissan in the early to mid 80s. Ford had been declining for years and Nissan could do no wrong. Here it is, 40 years later, and while they aren't setting the world on fire, Ford is still around and a major player, while Nissan is circling the drain. In those days, a lot of people thought that there was something in the Japanese culture that just made them better at building cars and running a successful business.

A lot of money was made in the 1980's publishing a plethora of these types of books...Japan would dominate everything, the United States would be in ruin, etc.  I've come to learn that Big Punditry, whether economic, political, or even sports, really may not be any better at prognostication than the average layman.

My buddy who owns a few nissan dealerships is bummed.  Hopefully this spurs Nissan to make some interesting cars. Hyundai and Kia have taken their marketshare- while Honda has appeared to have kept their piece of the pie.
