I'm in the market for another vehicle and have it narrowed down to these two: 12 Honda Fit or 16 VW Golf Sportwagen. Fit is base with 57k miles and Golf has 44k miles. Both stick shift. I've been a member of the Fit club before (07 sport) and had no issues with it. I've never had a VW before. Mrs DX has a Jetta but non turbo which has been okay so far. Which do I go with?
'16 VW will be the new MQB platform. I'd imagine the VW will be a nicer place to spend time depending how far of a commute you have (smoother/quieter/refined), but the Fit is known to be a simpler/more reliable box. YMMV.

Just grabbed a '17 Sportwagen. It is very comfy, and really quite peppy. As advertised it is 25/35 mpg, and my granny driving wife has gotten 30 around town. It has all the bells you could want. It makes me quite jealous just how nice it is. This is her second VW, and third within the family. All have gone a lot of miles, 130,000 plus.
I think Fits are really neat, but I'd have the VW, no question. Especially if it'll get much freeway use.
I guess the flip has some truth; if it'll be totally urban, the Fit fits into more places more easily, and has no shortage of stuff space.
Well I may be a bit biased, as I grew up in a family that worshiped VW (though nothing made after 1968). But I bought a Fit. My commute is short though. But in three days I've done over 150 miles and haven't noticed any downsides yet.
Short commute = Fit
Long commute = VW
I liked my 2012 Fit, but it was a little bit tiring to drive longer distances. It was a TARDIS when it came to hauling stuff, though.
+1 to the above. I've spent some time in/around both.
Cheap feeling but also cheap to operate and mostly around town driving. Fit
Nicer, more highway travel but potential VWlike issues. Sportwagen
In the other thread you mentioned driving 60 miles a day. I wouldn't be able to do it for very long in a Fit so please save yourself and don't drive a Fit that many miles per day. Get the VW and budget a little extra for whatever repairs might pop up.
In reply to clutchsmoke :
I drove ours 100-300 miles per day for work & it wasn’t bad when the car was new & I was 10 years younger. We did a few 12 hour trips with it a couple years ago & the seats were starting to bother us by the end, but the car also had 170,000+ miles on it by that point too.

I'd have the sportwagen for all the reasons mentioned. When you spend a lot of your day commuting its worth having a nicer place to be.
It looks like I am leaning towards the Sportwagen. SWMBO nixed the Fit idea. She wasn't crazy about the Fit I had when we first started dating. I went last night and test drove the Sportwagen and it was a very nice car. I could see myself driving it. Very comfortable and overall nice car to drive.
The Sportwagen I test drive sold from under me. I ended up getting a 15 Nissan Versa Note hatchback with a manual that was on the lot at work..
As I was reading the thread and responses, I was thinking that a real factor to consider is will the owner to tolerate a check engine light coming on with predictable regularity. For me, that ain't something I can live with so the answer is always Honda. Boring I know, but my scanner doesn't have to get used very often.

I feel half-blindsided...

I did not see option C coming.
