One of the S2ks that has turned up locally turns out to be a local car (the current owner bought it in the town I live in) but the owner has no maintenance history from previous owners. Stuff like that tends to make me nervous, especially with an engine like the S2ks.

Does anybody know if Honda dealers can check the maintenance history online for the stuff that was done at dealers? Given that we have two Honda dealers around here it shouldn't be hard to find out who serviced it but if they don't retain the history I'd be a little nervous.

Yes they should as it would go on the same history report that programs like carfax uses. That is of course only if they had done all their maintenance through a dealership. If they've done all their oil changes and maintenance at Walmart or Midas or someplace similar than you would be E36 M3 out of luck.

Talked to the local dealer's service department earlier - as you said they have records if the work was done at a Honda dealer.

Autocheck shows no maintenance history entries at all, the local dealer has exactly three (one from 2005, one 2010 and one 2011), and the last one is the current owner having the oil changed earlier this year.

I'm surprised that there weren't any records at all from the time the car was new and that somewhat puts me off that car (even though the service person I spoke to mentioned that these cars are very robust and can deal with this sort of abuse).

Pop the valve cover off and look at how the top end looks. Chances are it's fine.
