Although the NSX proved to the world that Japan could make a proper modern supercar, could it outrun one of the fastest of the era, the Ferrari Testarossa?

We won’t spoil the video, but it comes out to be a closer race than you might think.

Yeah, but is the NSX a supercar, or just a super car?

It matters not.

I'd take the NSX but whoa that driver was hot dogging it. I'm sure he could have improved those lap times by not hanging the tail out so much. I'll bet the NSX would last longer on the track as well.

I can attest to the fact that the NSX is indeed really good at just being a car.   In the 3.5 years I've had one the only repair has been a clutch slave.  Aside from that it has been oil and tires.

As to the supercar part, it was back in the day, now it is a period piece but it makes everyone smile, if people know what it is they are happy to see it and it makes me smile the most when driving it.  So analog, but modern enough, just to easy to deal with and it can go really fast really easily when you rev it out.  10/10, would recommend.

The NSX never got a fair shake, because it was so fricken modern when it came out that it gets compared to all of the truly modern supercar followers that had a lot more power.

When the NSX came out, there wasn't another competitor that didn't need engine out maintenance every few years and wasn't completely clapped out by 30k miles....and all overheated in traffic, didn't have AC, etc.

The NSX is about quality and balance.  It's totally approachable, but not special in that "my steering wheel doesn't line up with my pedal box" kind of supercar way.

That NSX driver was really throwing that NSX around the track!  Looked like fun!

To everyone saying the NSX driver would be faster if he wasn't hanging it out: isn't that the Drift King driving? If so, it's what he does.

In reply to Will :

Yup! You'd think that Keiichi Tsuchiya would be known for winning his class twice in the 24 hours of Lemans, but nope, he's known as the drift king.

It would be funny to remake this video again today, except also include, say, a V6 Accord or something like that just to see how close a modern commuter car is to supercars from back in the day

Agreed!  And if Dori Dori is driving it, it will still be a show.

I saw an early red NSX drive past the front of my house today. I do not see that every day.

While not a P-car, I feel you. Sports cars from 25+ years ago that are icons, generally, are not that quick compared to modern 'regular' cars. At least off the line under normal conditions etc

But at least we know that you'd smoke that caravan up at the tail of the dragon!

just got a moment to actually watch the video. the thing I like the most is that the testarossa runs 225/50 16 front tires, rears are only 255. Awesome!

I always thought bout buying a good used NSX. I didn't like the two tone cars with black top, but they stopped doing that after awhile.  I waited until the price on used ones came down - unfortunately I waited too long and they went up again.

I drove to work in my modded 300 bhp 88 Fiero and so did a nice red NSX.  (I'd politely move into the right lane - and then would floor it and leave him behind - he grew bored with this pretty quickly and stopped trying).

I met a guy tat had installed a turbo on his NSX - he said very expensive but took it to a much higher level and the engine took it.  Still regret not going that route.  The new NSX, for whatever reason, fails to capture my admiration.
