So the fiance's 1990 325i (automatic) is doing something REALLY weird. Last night when she came home, the car would make the most god awful noise when she put it into park. She had her sister come in and get me because she didn't know what to do. So it drove just fine, and shifted through the gears just fine, but as soon as you put it into park, is sounded like a belt squeal on crack, and it sounded like it was coming from the bell housing area. I told her turn the car off and then put it into park, then start it back up. She did, and everything worked perfectly fine. It actually happened about 10 days ago, but I put it in park and shut off the car so fast that I didn't really know what had happened, and when I restarted the car I couldn't recreate the sound. So tell me GRM collective, what the hell is going on here? Is it time for a 5 speed swap?

the only time it's not time for a 5-speed swap is when the car already has a 5-speed in it. sack up, berkeleyer! time to hang a third pedal!

No doubt. Time and money are the only things that have kept me from doing it already. Right now I could probably afford it, but I still don't have any freakin' time! Anyone have a cheap 5 speed swap laying around?

Most of the time, auto trans squeals are failing pumps and converters. I bet the converter sprag/stator is making the noise in this case.

That's exactly what I was afraid of. If that's the case, why would it make the horrible noise, but quit if I turn the car off and immediately turn it back on? I guess I'm just trying to get a visual of exactly what's going on in there and make some sense of it.

And why only in park? The converter and pump are always turning, so why would it only squeal then?

But the stator and sprag/one way clutch isn't. That is how you get the torque multiplication from the fluid coupling. When you take the load off, it squeals on the freewheel.

Here's one in the DMV area. I wouldn't call it "cheap" but not a terrible price I guess for everything you need.

That makes sense. My understanding of automatic transmissions is very limited. I've changed plenty of them, but don't totally know how they work.
