Be aware that while a 360 will bolt in where a 318 was the balance is different so if you do not also use the matching flexplate/converter/harmonic balancer combination you'll have a 4 wheeled paint shaker!
Good luck with your recovery and project

This is true, external dampened on the 360s.

I have an 'in progress' dakota 360 swap going (magnum). Some later 360s had a balanced flexplate/flywheel but my swap donor had a balanced converter.
Since im keeping the a500 i had to weld some balance weights to my existing converter with a paper template. Mopar sells a kit to do this that runs about $20.

Sounds like a fun project.
Mine's a later Dakota, so most of the elements are different. I took a 97 V6 Sport and decided to make it into an R/T killer. Bought a 5.9 from a wrecked Grand Cherokee, installed a windage tray, lumpy cam, 1.6 roller rockers, Mopar 1 piece aluminum intake manifold, larger throttle body and headers. Tranny is a 45RE with kevlar bands and clutch plates, and a transgo shift kit. Swapped the 3:55 rear end for 3:92s and a locker. It goes pretty good, only real problem was finding a computer that would talk to both engine and gauges, since a 5.9 wasn't available until 1998. Ended up using one for a 97 with 318, and having it reflashed.

5x4.5. 5 lug is the same as the Fords.
Your '91 was the first year for the 6-lug wheels. They are 6x4.5" Dakota and early Viper only. To go to 5 lug you'll need '87-90 Dak rotors up front and same years rear axles and drums. If junkyarding for the rear axles, make sure they are coming out of an 8 1/4 rear, not the light duty 7 1/4.
The axles are a C-clip design. You'll need to pop the diff cover off to get them out.

And although I tried the viper wheels do not fit well under a Dakota.

That should work. Make sure your trans kick-down linkage is connected. The lever on the trans should bottom out when at full throttle.
