Yeah, I know another one.

My Level 2's will be doing Electrical soon, whilst my Level 1's do Ignition.  I'm getting ready.

Probably elementary for all o' y'all, but very difficult for the kiddies to grasp.

After the Electrical unit, covering all the theory, watching all the videos, watching demos, and having discussions in class, Level 2's are required to take a starter completely apart, and explain in detail, exactly what I've shown you here.  So far, no kid has remembered any of this in the shop.

This one was today's fun:

Short and Sweet </Spinal_Tap>

Yet again, you show me that something that I thought I knew something about was actually something that I knew comparatively nothing about!

So here's my current question about starters...

Can you drive them with 24V for extended times without damage?  Starters are so common, and relatively cheap that it would make an interesting replacement to a small ICE for small power products.

(I know nothing about starters, other than you feed it 12V...  ;) )

Sadly, no.  In fact you can't run them on 12v for extended periods of time.  They're not designed for that kind of duty cycle.  You can however run some 6v starters on 12v for typical starter duty cycles without shortening their lives significantly.  There are many old tractors converted to 12v without a starter change.

Um.....

My Metalwork Level 3 students modify Toyota Starter Motors to use on Midget Gokarts (granted, they saty 12V, but we can run them until the battery is gone):
