I love them. Here's my old one after I swapped the Rabbit nose/Cabrio grille:

After I lowered it I put on the Isuzu Impulse wheels, which I thought fit it nicely.

I had an '84 then an '83 when I was in college and I desperately regret selling the '83. I have delusions of getting another and transplanting modern drivetrain, discs on all 4 corners, etc, etc. but keeping it look totally stock, make a sleeper out of it...

Chris_V, your old one looks fantastic!

Crystal wants a MK1 something. Golf/Rabbit/whatever.

I LOVE the way they look, and i think i'd like the way they drive, but i can't but wonder if that's a hell i don't want to explore.

Good looking Jetta... What is up with the Scirocco in the backround?

There are a few Mk1 cars with ALH tdi swaps that get over 60 mpg on tdiclub. Would make a great roadtripper.

And what's the blue car in the back of the second picture? Subaru something?

Ummm. I think you are letting the hate for later VW's cloud your judgement too much. It wasn't until the late 80's that VW's started to suck. A1's are berkeleying awesome. Easy as hell to work on and cheap to buy parts for. Simple as a stone and about as reliable mechanical fuel injection that while ugly is great for a daily.

I have had over 2 dozen of the damn things but I miss my caddy the most

There's a really nice MkI GLI that I pass all the time. I miss seeing those things.

The MKI is the best vw to buy. It's fun to drive slow and if you modify it its pretty fun in a tossable "fast" way also. My brother has 80 and 83 coupes which just look great.

I've owned just about every rabbit based car VW made. Jetta 2 and 4 door, diesels, convertible, pickup, scirroco 1 and 2. Really like the 2 door A1 Jetta. Too bad the ex-wife kept hitting things with it. I'm down to an 83 GTi ITB car at the moment. Would love to have an 81 Rocco S again.

Oh yeah--nice Jetta.

I loved my Mk1 GLI to death. Then it got stolen.

Still hold the title and keys...probably always will. You never know, I guess.

There's a Mk1 Jetta coupe running around my neighborhood and it's in awesome shape. I love it.
