I'm working on replacing the plugs on my 2000 Chevy 6.5l diesel. The stupid glow plug extension harnesses are a royal PITA, out of four, two of them the ceramic end is shattered, and one the wire us in 3 pieces.

The glow plug connects with a normal spade, how bad off would I be if I don't get replacement harnesses? Is prefer not to spend the $40 apiece if I can avoid it.

Here's what I'm talking about:Link

Well, it is probably ceramic because it gets really hot on that end. If you don't have something covering the spade connector, can something touch it? I mean, I don't see why you couldn't try it, but pay attention to stuff near by.

That was my assumption, too (about the heat). They are embedded in between the exhaust manifold, so it's certainly hot in the environment they live in. I was planning in covering the connector with some shrink wrap, even through they're not particularly close to anything..

I was just wondering who else has ran into this and if it's okay to bypass the factory stuff, or if I should bend over and take it.

the picture in the link is so small is the wire covered with ceramic as well? If so you can be ceramic "Fish Splines) to keep the heat out of the wire too. Theses ceramic beads are used in vacuum chambers a lot. Fish Splines

These seem like an ideal part to harvest from a junkyard...

Good call on that, Dwarf.. But it's not the wire. The wire has a traditional heat jacket on "normal" looking wire (it's supposed to be high-temp jacket, though). The Ceramic is the little square end. The connector is a "normal" spade, so the mate (on the wire) is the normal square that holds the female connector, it's just made out of ceramic instead of plastic.

Gameboy - Eh, I would think the chance of failure at getting one off intact from the boneyard is higher than it is at my house..

I sucked it up and ordered 3 new ones. I don't want to have to do the job again, so there goes $100..
