Ill try not to make this too long but does anyone know how i could go about finding a car that was signed over to a junk yard years ago?
My mom had a 80 Fairmont wagon that was given to her by her great aunt with a super low amount of miles on it , i remember 40k. She drove it everywhere including in situations that i was stunned to see it get thru, like 8 inches of unplowed snow with it dragging bottom and 14" tires.
Years later after driving it hard and my parents coming into some money she upgraded to a 4wd. The Fairmont was parked off in the woods, it needed a carb rebuild and a couple other odd small problems like the hi beam stalk was on its 3rd or 4th replacement, a tree smashed the fender decently and she had smoked in it, a problem now that she had quit smoking. In hindsight it was a terrible decision but at the time they needed space and it was one of a few dragged off.
My mom passed 2 years ago and i would love to find the car again. It might not be anything super special with its bench seats, 6cyl 3spd drivetrain, dents, rust and oddly discolored blue paint( it was parked in the sun for years and only really got sun on 1 side) but i have a lot of happy memories of it.
Any idea how i can find it again? No one remembers the junk yard it was taken to and the tow truck guy is gone.

You may have a chance just trying the closest scrap yards, but if the yards near there are like the ones up here they don't keep stuff like they used to. Good luck with the hunt, it will be cool if you can find it.
do you have the plate number on an old photo ??
Maybe you can ask the local cops to check if its still registered or deleted as scrap.
Here they need to turn papers in if they are a legal auto scrap yard
maybe tell them you left your homework ( or passport ) between the rear seats :)
Good Luck

I dont off hand but i did just remember that my dad has his old truck still parked up on his land and i may be able to get a vin number off an old insurance form left in the glovebox.

I can definitely look for an old pic, im sure there is one somewhere!
Its been at minimum 8 years i doubt they would fall for the passport story lol
In hind sight i probably should have used a better title like How Do I Find My Moms Old Car to make people want to click on it
8 years.. I bet even if it went right back on the road again, it was probably scrapped, stripped, and crushed. Sorry.
One of the yards around here does that. They will take a car in as scrap and if they feel they can resurrect it with a minimal amount of work or money, they will set it aside and work on it before putting out in the parking lot for sale.
There’s a yard near me that still has cars from the 60’s, 70’s and all the way up to modern. Import, domestic, Japanese, German. Don’t give up.
If you can find the vin go over to foureyedpride.com there's a guy who keeps track of every vin reported and has for years. He even requests vin and door tag info off cars people find in junkyard so he can update there status. His info using the vin for my car even gave me the exact options listed on my build sheet.
