I followed the Subaru Rally Team USA truck north on I-5 on Monday and after some searching, the second-ever round of the Global RallyCross Championship is supposed to be in Snoqualmie, WA on April 15 & 16. I found their site, which is a typical craptastic blogger platform full of useless tweets, and am unable to find out ANY other info or buy tickets!

Does anybody have any idea? It would be pretty cool to see Marcus Gronholm, Ken Block, Travis Pastrana, and Tanner Faust race, so I really want to go...

Looks like they haven't updated the ticket info for the next event yet.

Exactly. That website is useless unless you want to read all of their twats.

From lurking on the forums over at specialstage.com, it sounds like the WA location isn't 100% nailed down and if it's held at DirtFish as planned, there are minimal facilities/spectating opportunities.

Edit: from this thread...

the internets said: They still don't have all the required permits in place yet for the Seattle round. I hope it gets figured out soon
the internets said: I am sure the event will happen, maybe just somewhere else. BTW, I don't know how spectator friendly dirt fish will be, there is only enough onsite parking for like 40 cars, no services, and no stands.

It's nailed down enough for the Subaru Rally Team hauler to drive up from wherever.

When you said useless blogger/tweets, I thought you meant this site.

And bummer there aren't any East Coast races this season. We were spoiled last year with 3 weekends only 1.5 hours away in Jersey last season!

Yeah, it's pretty frustrating how delayed the official event details are...the event is supposed to start in 16 days and it's still not official!!! I was planning on running in the 2WD class, but at this point I'm getting pretty turned off at the idea.

I went as a spectator. As far as spectating goes, it was pretty crummy. The whole point of rallycross for spectators is that you can watch the racing, see the cars, have facilities, etc. all in one spot. From my arrival it went something like this:

Arrive to event in BFE, get charged $10 to park. There are cops monitoring the traffic outside the gates, not allowing parking along the road, forcing you to pay $10 whether you like it or not. Once inside, it's clear that this industrial park has TONS of places to park, they're totally gouging people by charging $10 for parking.

Waited in a big line before the gates open while listening to cars race around the track. Not sure if this was practice or qualifying, but spectators weren't allowed to witness it.

Got in just in time to catch the last few cars blasting around the track, but can't see anything. The only spot near the gate that you could see the track from was a tall dirt mound that only event staff and participants were allowed on.

To see the track, we have to go to the bleachers/scaffolding on the other side of the track. This is about a .3-.5 mile walk through mud. There was supposed to be a shuttle van, but it was only operating occassionally.

Once we got to the scaffolding, the cars were done with whatever they had been doing, but we decided to stake some claim for a "good" spot. The scaffolding was super shaky and we looked at the load rating posted on the sides of it...it would be well overloaded if they put a bunch of people up there. About the same time we noticed that, we were told everybody had to get off the scaffolding. They had a construction crew adding to the steps and putting orange net to the sides so little kids wouldn't fall off. So they were trying to be safe, just not very good at it. We decided to just sit on the (much lower) bleachers as it seemed the safe thing to do.

While waiting for things to get going, a couple of us walked over to the pits to check out the cars. The big boys were all roped off and the spaces were really tight in the pits, so you could hardly see the cars. Since they staged for races where spectators weren't allowed, we couldn't take a good close look at the cars. Of course, the privateers were all wide open to check out, very friendly, and would talk about details of their cars if you asked. The big boys did grace us with their presence at some tables where a huge line formed for autographs...good for the guys getting their kids a chance to meet the drivers, but I just wanted to check out the cars.

When the racing was about to start, I trudged through the mud (for the third time now) to go back to our seats. I asked how I could get on the dirt hill that was closer to the pits and was told spectators can't go there, only staff and racers.

Back at my seat, the racing was generally fun to watch. Unfortunately, they were still working on the scaffolding and the sound of nailguns, circular saws, and staple guns was really annoying. There was also a huge line of people formed waiting to get onto the scaffolding. They also did the now-commonplace "XTREME" music blasting with announcers blabbing away the ENTIRE time. Not only that, but some funny talking announcer from another country kept saying Mit-SI-BU-shi and it was driving me freaking bonkers. To add disgust to discomfort, the porta-potties that were right behind the scaffolding had a visit from the pumper truck during the racing. It was absolutely rank and I felt like I was chewing poop mist for about 15 minutes while they cleaned them. Great timing on the bathroom servicing guys...

Build up to the A-main events was pretty slow due to constant grooming of the courses between races without any type of exhibition events to occupy the crowd. There was a food cart that couldn't keep up with demand for warm beverages, that was the only decent distraction during the breaks. The A-main was an absolute blast to watch....if all the racing was like that, they'd have a hit on their hands in no time. We could see most of the track (the warehouse blocked some) and the competition was pretty good. The AWD cars were especially impressive, those things would outright SCOOT. The 2WD cars were almost all repurposed local-ish rally cars, understandable with the extremely short event notice and lack of publicity the 2wd guys get.

After the race, they won't let spectators out on the course where the winners are spraying themselves with champagne and doing photo shoots. They force the crowd to take the long walk around through the mud instead. This is now my fourth trip through the mud for the day and not any more enjoyable than the first.

In summation...great idea, horrible execution. I'm sure it was a ton of fun for the competitors, but the enjoyment of spectators were definitely not given much priority. Obviously, this is the first event they've done at this venue and it was on extremely short notice....and it showed.

/end semi-informative rant that I hope some event organizers will see...

Bryce, Thanks for the 411 on the spectator side! I watched a ton of coverage on espn3 and it looks great. Rallycross could be a hit, I think, especially when they get their logistics down! From the internet coverage, the track looks decent. But it did not look good for spectators, Irwindale looked to be a better style venue. I hope more people take notice of rallying and spread the word!

I never made it as they didn't update their horrible website in time. It is being reported as a "sold out" crowd though. Sounds like I didn't miss much though according to Bryce's account. Looking forward to the Oregon Trail Rally next month instead, they put on a great show for spectators.

Local boys Cody Crane (CRX) and Doug Folsom (Horizon) ran in 2WD and did pretty well for themselves.

Except that Doug rolled the car. On TV. :)

Here's his recent post about it:

Facebook Note

"I was competing in a 79 Omni at the Global Rallycross Championship this weekend. Day one was a Super Rally event and day two was a Rallycross. It was a mad thrash to get it together.

The Super Rally on Friday went well other than I missed the practice in the morning due to a discrepancy with the tech inspector. I was taking it easy learning how to drive this thing. It has a different brakes setup and different suspension that I have never driven on. I was only running a T1 stock setup with 7 PSI on Friday. I ended up in the Quarter final but lost to my co-worker who is one of the fastest 2wd stage rally driver in the USA.

I had a few problems with the car and my driving on Saturday, Boost was increased to 9 PSI. I broke two CV's on the drivers side axle, rolled the car and then slammed the drivers rear wheel into a concrete barrier exiting the warehouse. I was finally figuring out how to get the car to rotate how I wanted. I was really struggling with the two 90 degree turns on tarmac. The handbrake was crap and I had to use it while braking to get the car to rotate at all. It was a blast and if this stick around I'm going to do everything I can to do compete in more of these events.

You can watch it on ESPN3 on the internet if your internet service provider has paid to let you watch it, or you can watch it on your x-box if you have it hooked up to the internet. The show will be on ESPN2 on May 14th.

Doug and I have run a Shelby CSX in ChumpCar for a couple of years now and he's a pretty damned good driver and fabricator. He and the rest of the Dirty Drifters are serious Rally dorks and a great group of folks.

Here is a Facebook Note from Cody:

"Thanks to everyone for the kind words and a special thanks to Derik Nelson for welding my rear trailing arm so my wheel wouldn't fall off on Saturday, and to Sean Medcroft for towing our car back to Portland don't think it would have made it back after what I put it through and to Scott Kovalik for letting me use his defender again! and Doug and Brain for helping fix the car for the main race and my girlfriend for being awesome and actually encouraging me to race on our anniversary it was a blast chasing down that Porsche in a 5000 dollar car"

Cody Crane is a blast to watch, definitely our favorite out there. Jessica cheered for Cody almost as loud as she did for Tanner Foust, and she doesn't even have a crush on Cody. I think.

All 12+ hours of the ESPN3 live feed can be torrented in case anyone is wondering... its actually really good, especially since you can skip the ~15 minute waits when something bad happens/someone breaks and get right to the good stuff.

I went the the finale of the NJMP rally X season last fall, and I found the 2wd racing at that event every bit as good as the big bucks awd racers.

I hope this catches on and more regular motorsports venues will suport it for the sake of the spectators. I thought that NJMP had some spectating bugs to work out, after hearing about this venue, I'll retract that complaint.

I took my 4 yo son with me to the NJMP rally X, he didn't seem to like it at the time, but since then He's asked if I can put a "growling muffler that shoots fire balls" on my car several times, I think He's on the right path

Just got done watching both days coverage on espn3.com. It was definitely good to be able to skip ahead to just watch the actual races.

MAN that CRX was awesome to watch!! He could keep up with the Porsche at times, and that pass on the Focus was one of the best moves I've seen, that seriously took some big ones...On the other end of the spectrum, how Dave Mirra scored a factory Subaru ride (I can Ridez a BMX, yayyy!) is BEYOND me. He bounced and crashed into just about everything out there, including his competitors, and proved that not every extreme sports retiree can cut it in a rally car. Whatever brings the sponsers, I guess...

All in all it was fun to see, and I hope to see the series grow. It was a little unpolished at times, but its the second ever race in the series' existence, so they've got time.

You'll need to log in to post.
