I, too, appear to be a complete idiot when it comes to automotive wiring. Give me busted parts that I can see, hear, and touch, and I'm great. Give me trailer lights that absolutely should work, therefore they don't, and I've been known to go absolutely ballistic.
In my case, I have the basic understanding of volts, amps, watts, ohms, etc. I even have an Extra class ham license (KJ1H), but it's a new fangled one that doesn't require a whole lot of electrical know-how beyond a few very specific areas. My problem is taking the next step - knowing how to apply that knowledge to automotive electrical problems. I don't do so well when I can't look at the thing, see the busted axle, and say "Well THERE'S your problem!"
