Surely this question is incredibly out there and broad. But I was wondering what it takes to organize an autocross.
I figure you would need:
-Written consent from property owner to use said area.
-Tons of pylons...
-Timing lights/scoring system.
-Some way to get the word out; here, myautoevents etc. etc.
-Some form of radios of corner workers.
And thats all i got, what else would someone need? Would insurance be a necessity?

Just tell everyone it's an automotive conga line, then remove a chair.
No, wait. That won't work.
I've got nothing. Talk to NYGNeon.
Yes, insurance is necessary, at least if you're gonna have this event on MY property.
I wrote an article on how to do it for the Alfa Owner a long time ago- seems to be still rather applicable.
Volunteers are a large part of doing it, too.

I think I can get a good amount of volunteers. The events around here seem to have been lacking the past couple years. The insurance thing kind of scares me though, how would i get the insurance? Im guessing I would pay up front for it?

Even with insurance etc, (IANAL) but I'd think you would want/need some organized LLC or Co. to be the official host, so that it's not "Jim's Autocross", but "Jim's Autocross LLC autocross".
You'll also need rules/classing system (my understanding is you get a letter from the SCCA lawyers if you use theirs) and a tech inspection/safety grid.
Do they usually have an ambulance there?

Depending on your state, you may have to submit to the state for approval. I haven't done this in years, but it was necessary in NJ. Is there a local club that has done it in your area? They could give some specific info.

The easy way is to be part of a bigger club. The Alfa club has a blanket insurance policy where we pay a rider for motorsports events. I'm sure SCCA's is similar.
You can buy individual event insurance, if you are an organized corporate level (recognized by your state) club.
For you, I would look to a national club that already does it- join them, and volunteer to run an event. AROC, BMWCCA, Corvette- etc.

Yeah someone once told me you have to make sure to clearly differentiate yourself (scoring/classing/name) from organizations that you are not a part of or they will QUICKLY get lawyers on you... It seems like the only way to get this working well and have more than just 1 event would be to use a national club as a blanket... hmm...

I didn't think about that at all. Ill look into that.
When I was on the BOD of Detroit Region SCCA, we allowed use of all our equipment and "expertise", and there was talk of allowing an electric car club to use our insurance and sanctioning for a small event.

not really sure about that... our little club.. not affiliated with any national organization... has it's own rules, but also state that anything not covered is , by default, covered by the SCCA rules... we've never had any problem w/ them because of that...
