My sister had a Bug back in the early 70's, it was great, especially in the winter when you got stuck. By yourself, you could open the engine hatch (with it in gear and the rear tires spinning) and while pushing, control the throttle and steer with your arms. After you where unstuck, release the throttle and jump in and drive away (if you were quick and lucky). My bother had a 74 van which was the best mountain ski rig ever. Camp in -20 F weather, get up and start the van and pass a long dryer duct (from the rear heater) around for everybody to share to heat up our sleeping bags. And finally, my buddy bought a derelict sand buggy with a hand steering brake which could turn on a dime...as long as you didn't mind getting dirt rained down on top of your head.
