Been thinking of chopping up my fiat to make it lighter. One of the ideas I had was to replace the outer body with glassfibre panels and replace most of the car with a tube chassis similar to a lo cost, but fitting within the restaints of the fiat body style (driving position is in the centre of the car)

question is.. how much of the original car do I need to keep to legally keep it titled as a fiat 124 spider?

It probably depends on your state, but I think you need the VIN plate.

Considering that the vin plate AND the stamped vin are on the same crossmember for the cowl.. You think I might be able to get away with just transferring that part to the tube frame?

parker may be right. I'm not condoning such a thing, but a lot of the Latin American aircooled Beetles in the US are wearing VIN plates from 1960s/70s US market cars that dissoved into piles of rust-colored powder years ago..
