I like Rancheros, but once the price got up over $1500, I'd start to lose interest. At $1800, I'd still be thinking about it, but I'd also be thinking about lowballing.

I was thinking 2500.... It is still based on the T-bird platform. Looks like a 302/C4 combo, needs more 545/557 BBF and a C6.
no its built more on the LTD II platform and its a 351 in her

So was the T-Bird back then.

True story, a GRM'er on here (I'll save him the embarrassment) accidentally bought one of those once. It was a real GT in silver with the black graphics, rally gauges, the works. IIRC, it was a 302/2Bbl/C4 combo, but it might have been 351. Anyway, one owner car, zero rust, nice interior, ran and drove like a champ. Paint was a little skuzzy. He also overpaid for it. Fast forward two years and a scrap guy gave him ~$400 for it in the same condition. Just because a book says it's worth money, doesn't mean that it actually is. I hope you turn a profit it, but as a semi-pro car flipper myself (over 100, only lost money on 1), I wouldn't have touched that monster for more than $500...

One thing I have learned since hanging out on this board is any car that is over 500 bucks and isnt super mint is an over priced rip off.

Glad to see it worked out for you. I am of the opinion that any rust free car older car is valuable to somebody.

Cutter, This forum is made up of a bunch of cheapskates, not that there's anything wrong with that. But they want to buy for the prices you buy for, not the prices you sell for. There are many people out there that will pay more than the people here.
From my experience, we could all learn something from you.

did you look at those cars. not the same they have over 130k on them the low mileage one is a plain jane car.....

on cars like these that are not the most collectable you have to pick the model that is disired by the people who want them you would think the GT is what everyone wants but it isnt people are looking for the 1979 1/2 model car is their unicorn like the one i found then its the squire and then the GT.

like the miata is a treasured car here i always walked right by them because i really didnt have a outlet for them because a lot of people i know think they are some girls car and wouldn't be caught dead driving one. but now i look at them.

just saying if you want to flip some cars keep a open mind and dont have tunnel vison when it comes to buying them

The car was 500. The autographed book it came with was an extra 400!

Oh, so I really made out on that deal. Seriously, I couldn't be happier with the deal we made.

Value of something like that is dependent on geography and socioeconomic makeup of area, by my extensive CL browsing.

Generally speaking, in the south or west, I would expect that to be a $1500 car. In the rust belt $3000, on the bad side of town shined up with a set of 22s, $5000.

Halve those numbers for dealings within the GRM community.

You just asked me what I would pay for it. I've never paid market price for a car.

I guess I'm confused, you asked what people word pay for it and then insult those that would not have bought it, by saying they passed on a "jem".

You "internet claimed" to have flipped an ugly car for a profit. Good for you. There's also a guy who "internet claimed" to be a French model and it worked out for him too.

I just don't get the reason for your original post.

I don't think it was bragging. Just maybe trying to make a point to would be car flippers not to overlook certain cars.

But I could be wrong?

I didnt mean to insult anyone if anyone took it that way i am sorry. I wanted to see how many members would walk by it or lowball it. I dont win on everyone but i have a good average on wins. I have a couple sitting right now that i just hope to break even on like the riv i have listed over on the classifieds now. Itls just that i know a lot of members here are walking by cars that money could be made on just because they feel they are ugly or they dont realize there are people out there that love them and will pay for them

OK, my bad. I must have taken it the wrong way.

I don't flip cars, (I don't have the time or cash to do it) but it seemed like there was some attitude because a lot of people would have paid a lot loss than you did.

No worries man, its all good. And if I ever need a ugly Ranchero I know where to go...

I don't pass on anything that is a deal that i can make money on.

however, i am more comfortable spending less than a grand on a flip car.

my best were a free sunbird vert that i sold with zero effort an hour after i dropped it off the trailer for $300, a $450 80 Z28 that i turned $1800 on with no work, and a $500 caravan with wheelchair lift that i put $35 of plug wires and fuel filter into and sold really cheap for $1250 because i wanted it to go to someone who could use it and couldn't afford a new $45k van.

i only have 2 rules anymore. no imports and no fords. i don't know imports well enough to try, and i just dislike fords. i make my best money on the stuff i know best, mostly because i tend to run in circles where i can easily unload them quick.

I have a serious problem with buying cars to sell. I always make money unless it was a pet project (I usually break even or trade) I bought an unfinished truck 3 months ago and drove it to a friends shop. It's being finished this week.

I sold a car Friday and bought a truck Saturday that needs tires paint a windshield and fuel pump, i can make money on it but i may keep it. Im bidding on another truck tomorrow that if I win is allready sold but after that I'm going to try to wait until I at least get the other 3 home. Unless my neighbor calls me to sell her truck to buy a more fuel efficient car (which I allready have a buyer for) my brother has two cars I'm trying to sell for him. I've been kind of rude to ppl lately. I get literally 50 calls a day sometimes.

I usually keep about 7k on hand to play with trading. The DMV know me by name and my ins agent avoids me at all costs. The problem is sometimes I get 4 or 5 vehicles for sale at once, can't get any gone and miss out on great deals due to no play money on hand.

Good for you, something is worth whatever someone will pay for it. Someday I would love to grab one of the older smaller rancheros for a lowes runs/ estate sale shopping weekend toy, but they seem to be rarer and more expensive. At least in PA where everything older than 15 years is rusted to crap
