My sister's mustang is in sad shape, 2001 Base mustang with an auto and OMG yellow paint. 205K miles on the clock. She's wanting to change the engine its using oil, leaking oil, and I think it's got a rod knocking. I've found an engine/trans combo for cheaps on CL, that car is a year older, with 100K miles and is wrecked.
Can you drop the subframe on these cars, and take the drivetrain out from underneath, or are they old school and require being taken out from the top? The other car I'm not worried about scratching or whatever and I don't think he is either, but the body on hers is actually in pretty good shape, short of having a ton of miles.
Anyone have any experience pulling an engine on a V6 'Stang (and putting another in it's place)
If a buddy of mine and myself can get a longtube equipped 2v with 5spd attached out the top of a 02GT.... I don't see why you can't do the same.
You can drop the "K" member with the engine attached but it is alot more work then pulling it out the top. You will have to realign the "K" member back to the car after you reinstall the replacement engine.
Extra work, extra steeps that are just not required if you take it out the top.
pull it from the top.. once you get the wires, hoses, and exhaust out of the way the engine and trans are only held in with a few bolts.
just dive in and you will have the engine sitting on the floor in a couple of hours..
i like to start under the car- starting with the flexplate bolts, driveshaft, exhaust, trans cooler lines, trans crossmember bolts, and shifter cables..
then set the car on the ground and start attacking things under the hood, starting with the radiator and working your way back to the firewall.
hook up the cherry picker and lift it out.. install is the reverse of removal.
