After more fun than I care to repeat, I finally got the damping pads off the inside of the Molvo's roof panel so I can start to iron out that field of steel.

Before I can start, I need to figure out how to remove the residue of adhesive. It is still sticky enough that it would glue the tiles back on if I touch them back, and certainly a hindrance to the work I need to do.

Acetone did not do much to dissolve the stuff, made it soft for a while so I could wipe it around, but not lift it. Any other tricks I should be aware of before I go at this with a wire wheel in a less than ideal overhead position? Did I mention it sucked removing the things!?

Methyl Ethyl Ketone?

Any hints on where a civilian would obtain such a chemical? Sounds like something I need to show up in a HazMat suit to collect.

I'd try 3M general purpose adhesive cleaner.  It should be available at most auto parts stores.

MEK is available in the big box hardware stores south of the border, maybe not on your side.

It has the side benefits of: smelling like butterscotch and directly attacking the reproductive bits...

I have good success with rubber cement thinner.  My brand of choice is Bestine, but there are others.  It's a solvent, so it should be used in a well ventilated area, but it's not exceptionally lethal and it's fairly benign on paint and most plastics.

“not exceptionally lethal” — now there’s an endorsement!

I have had success using plain old rubbing alcohol on glue residue.  Cheap and pretty effective.  Dries quick too.

Someone on here recommended bestine to me before.

Bless them.

It took the adhesive off remarkably well, and didn't harm the paint at all.

That would probably be me. It’s one of the best-kept secrets so I like to share it as widely as possible.
