Strange question I know, but I'm sure people here have previously mentioned looking up shocks by external dimensions the cross referencing catalogers to find other vehicles with similar or identical dimensions and using those. How or where are people doing this?
In this case the the valving is unimportant, in fact we will probably drain the shocks so they effectively have no damping. This is obviously for mocking things up and bench testing not on vehicle, so I am really not worried about valving right now.
I've been in touch with a two of the biggest names in the industry and they were surprisingly unhelpful in their initial response.
thx.

Great start, anyway to check shock body and rod diameter?
thx
A company like AFCO could probably build you some empty shocks to your chosen dimensions. Won't be as cheap as a set of Monroes, but it's an option. Alternately, build your own out of some threaded rods or a welded up piece of tube with some eyelets on the end.
More information would make things easier.

I will have to dig, but I recall there being a bilstein site that was good for this info...
I only got the 3100? Bils guide for offroaders. Still some decent info.

In reply to Keith Tanner :
It's difficult to say more as this is for work. For work buying something from someone like AFCO would certainly be cheaper than making something when considering fully fringed costs. Off to AFCO's website now......
If you need a contact at AFCO, let me know. The shocks we used were very configurable, we could specify body length, shaft length, type of fixing at the top of the shaft, etc. See page 24+ in their catalog, for example.

I had to do this a while back; I googled the rough dimensions which gave me several cars that used those dimensions, after that I used Rockauto's website to narrow down the selection to two applications and finally I ordered the one each cheapest brand of those applications. I think they cost me $9 apiece or soemthing riduclous like that.

This is very helpful stuff - I'm trying to find performance oriented shocks/struts for my first gen V and the pickings are slim. I have a nice ground control kit was was intended for use on the stock dampers but I have never seen lowered height and higher spring rates play well with oe dampers. Now hoping for an offset to the sachs oe stuff.
