So, there are a few racing bucket list items I have, and I don't suppose I'll ever be able to check any off my list, but I wanted to get some input from the hive on one of them.
I really, REALLY, want to make a serious go of a land-speed record at Bonneville. I don't care what class, so I suppose it would be the most GRM-esqu record.
What do you guys/girls think the most affordable record record to go after at Bonneville, and how many precious internal organs would I have to sell?
GO!

I honestly don't think I would give two E36 M3s about the record once I got there in something that I built from the ground up and got to run it WFO on the salt for a mile.

Just me, but that's my take. Regardless, slap a grm challenge budget car together for the salt and do it. Don't look back or worry.

The great thing about the interwebs is that there's a forum for everything.

From what I understand, you're not likely to go WFO for very much, the salt surface has about the same amount of friction as wet snow.

This makes it more, not less, interesting.

5000 total members and 54 subforums. Jesus.

I'm curious what you find out. I've tried to look into their rules online and they make the SCCA SOLO rulebook look like a joke. They have a brazillion classes and very little and/or very cryptic info on all of them :(

I see you're in Michigan. The Ohio mile is a lot closer if you want to give that a shot.

I've been building my car with the intention of eventually getting it out to the salt flats as a bucket list item. My goal is the 200 MPH club but whether I achieve that or not isn't as important to me as just getting out there and running the car. I ran the car when the ECTA was at Maxton and after that at unsanctioned mile races at the Dade/Collier airport supersonic runway down here in FL. Will run it at Texas or Ohio for testing before the trip out west. My big hurdle will be coming up with an engine that can put out enough power. Takes 650-700 HP to get a 2nd gen F body to 200.

I got a 404 error trying to search the SCTA/BNI records for a class you could make an attempt at on a budget. There's a link to it here on the LSR website, maybe it'll work later. http://www.landracing.com/index.php/component/content/article?id=3 I'd think the most affordable classes would be the low speed classes just because of the safety equipment etc. required as you escalate in speed. I've got over 10 grand in safety items and will have to spend several thousand more. Whatever you decide on you'll want to run one of the other venues before the salt flats. Maybe try for the steam powered record at the ECTA? It's only like 67 MPH. That'd be kinda GRMish. Or maybe electric, that record's currently only a bit over 100 MPH at the ECTA. Can you say Tesla? No roll bar's and such required till you get over 135MPH.

That's some good info not a ta. I was wondering how the cost of safety equipment would impact my dream.
Tom_spangler, thanks for the link. There's a classifieds section, that's dangerous haha

Class: fastest Bonneville at Bonneville

You can follow up this adventure with Le Man and Daytona and their coresponding classes. Triple digit speeds in a Montana is no longer deemed reasonable nor prudent though.

I knew an engineer/professor who was building a car for Bonneville. In his basement. I guess technically it was a motorcycle, as it had 3(staggered) wheels. He seemed pretty confident it would fit up & out his stairs once completed. I'm no engineer, but I have the idiot-savant gift of being able to visually confirm fit/no-fit with damn good accuracy, and his claim seemed quite optimistic to me.

You'll get an "excessive fuel consumption" ticket, and nothing more, most likely.

Low displacement motorcycles. I want the world's fastest Honda TwinStar. KKK makes very small turbos. Even with a custom fitted Vanson suit, there is no way you could spend 5 digets on safety for motorcycles.
