I pulled the valve cover off the Benz in prep for a head gasket today so I could check timing chain stretch (common on these engines). It looks like the timing chain has been replaced at some point, BONUS!
Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised that the cam lobes looked pretty good. I could still see machining marks on them? What do you think?
Number 1 lobes
Number 2 lobes
Number 3 lobes Number 4 lobes Number 5 lobes

I hope I'm not wrong here, but I think those look good for 290K miles. The number 4 and 5 intake lobes seem to look discolored, but I think it looks like that because those two cylinders are reflecting the under-hood insulation, the other 3 are getting the sky reflecting???

I see the occasional cam, and that looks perfect to me.

Those look new to me. Maybe cams and chain was replaced not long before you got it?

The cams look perfect. I'd be thrilled to find that in any car, much less a high milage example.

My 330k 300e looked like that when I did the chain. I couldnt believe it.

That style, especially with hydraulics, rarely wears enough that it's noticeable.

Yeah, I thought it looked great. I just didn't want to say that, I'm afraid it'll jinx me. Now, the crankshaft will turn to power
