Hey gang.

I know some of you have hauled stuff up in Canada. A freind is going from New Hampshire to uper Michigan (sandusky?) to buy a race car. Quickest way looks to be go to buffalo and go up in to Canada and come back down. He's hauling an empty trailer out don't think he'll get much problems BUT on the way back he'll be full of the race car and parts. What kind of problems might he run in to? Any ideas how to make it go smoother? Think his plan is to leave sat the 10th in the afternoon.

Thanks 44

I don't imagine there would be too many problems. Ice hauled cars down to races in the states and never had any problems.

I don't forsee any problems. Make sure his lights are working, and his load looks OK, and they won't even notice him.

Maybe stick to commercial border crossings? For example, cross in Buffalo or Lewiston instead of Niagara Falls. I don't know if that will matter or not though. I moved from the Falls to Northern Ontario through Michigan and didn't have any trouble. That was in 96 though...

Make sure he has his passport with him. Mandatory now when traveling from US to Canada, and back.

I thought an "Enhanced License" would do it.

I have no idea what an enhanced license is,but when I travel to Canada they always want my passport, and I never travel by plane always on the ground.

I think it's not so much that we want his passport, it's that the US wants his passport coming back.

And they COULD, for reasons of national security, remove & inspect everything from the trailer. My b.i.l. had his Elantra stripped down, including removing the rear seats, coming into North Dakota, that well known hotbed of evil. They just chose him at random.

Bring very good documentation.
A firm list of what is being sold and full verifiable details of who it is being sold to.
Maintain a list of what was sold and for how much to whom.

An Enhanced License in New York is similar to a Passport in that there is a lot of documentation involved. It's much more difficult to falsify one than a normal license. It's meant for crossing to Canada and Mexico for those that don't want to spend ~$100 for a Passport.

I've had trouble returning to the US, on what are said to be "random stops", which tend to occur after the agent sees something he doesn't like. I would go straight through, without stopping, other than maybe for fuel (it'll be more expensive on the Canadian side). That way, you can point out that you came straight through, which should lessen the chances you are considered a smuggler.

Be sure you have all your paper work in order. Be sure you have the trailer registration, had that checked once. There could be a problem at customs as to the ownwership of the race car and it's value. Check before you go.

The "enchanced license" is a NYS thing, I think. Maybe NH has something similar.
