I've never had one, for basically the same reasons I've never bough one with a used car - they typically seem to not cover whatever it is that happens to fail.
Besides, this is GRM! Hell, I designed/installed my own septic system in 10-days when the one at my first home failed inspection a week before we sold it, and I know people who've installed their own HVAC systems. What could possibly go wrong?

I don't have a clamp-on ammeter, but Harbor Freight is just down the street. the terminals were definitely corroded, which probably encouraged it to fail sooner, but I'll check current draw under load & get a better idea of the health of the compressor.
I'm all about fixing stuff myself too (grm ftw!) but, at least in California, when you buy a house the seller has to provide a 1-year warranty through a home warranty company. Usually a $50 deductible.
I'd check into it - make a call, write that check and see what all they replace!
