Hypothetically, which of these cars would you prefer to own and why?

The second one.

The first is an expensive toy that I could enjoy owning.

The second I would enjoy driving. Anywhere anytime.

The 356, because that is my logic-free gut opinion and I'm sticking to it.

356

I've wanted one since I was 14.

911, it has and will be my ideal, my dream car, had the poster, so forth and so on... It is classic, fun, and practical enough to drive any day.

911 never had any interest in the 356.

The 911 is the better, more attractive, more fun to drive and more awesome all around car but I suffer from the genX/aging punk rocker problem of revulsion of status and wealth. As much as I want a 911 with every fiber of my being I don't like being seen in them. I can drive a 356 with no issues. Something about the earlier body says cool classic rather than yuppie wannabe.

It is the same reason I could never drive this

but would kill for one of these

911 without any question.

The 356 is an overpriced VW in my mind.

Both because they tick different boxes. But if it must be just one, I also vote 911 since I think you'd get more use out of it. How often would you realistically drive the 356?

911

I own an old Ghia which is very similar to a 356, so the 356 does not do much for me (and way expensive for the performance you get).

I suspect I would be a bit under whelmed by an early 911's performance (since I drive a hopped up Corvair), but I think the "evil" handling would be fun to play with (in the appropriate location of course).

Bring back the original IROC series!!:

The 356. Always wanted one and I've already had a few 911s. I'll be happy with a 356B/t6 coupe - a little scruffy so I wouldn't mind driving the snot out of it. Although I'm stuck in the mindset that a driver t6 should be around 12k, not 30k. Didn't help that one of the docs at our hospital DDs his 9 months out of the year (turbo miata is his alternate ride)

If you gave it to me, the 356. If it was my money. The 911.

Both are tremendous fun to drive, but if I were to own it, I'd probably get the 911. It's more useable, faster, easier to drive quickly.

The 356 is getting WAY too pricey for my tastes, and it'd be hard to justify the risks in driving a 70K car on the weekends.

If it were me, though, I'd probably say neither and get the 912.

It would have to be the 911 but I would remove the whale tail as they don't belong on narrow bodied cars.

I've always loved 356's, for some reason, but for a do-it-all "fun" car, 911 hands-down.

But as Maroon said, I also would probably opt for a 912. Had a chance several years ago to buy a '76 912 E from a friend of mine. Still pissed at myself for passing on it.

911 without a question. 356 has nice lines but as soon as it is started it looses everything for me. I start to think super Beatle.

Neither. They've both become way too over priced for what they are.

The 356's look super cool IMHO but are gutless. The early pre big bumper 911's are the only ones I'd ever want but as already noted, have become way over priced.

I owned a pair of 356's back in the mid 80's when they were $6500. cars. Sold the last one to purchase a Sunbeam Tiger for the same price at that time. My best friend has a 1965 911. Cool car, but is it really worth the $80-90,000. he could probably get for it?

Ill take the 356. I have had an irrational lust for one for as long as I can remember.

Being a huge early VW and Porsche fan it's natural.
