Is there a RWD transmission that would bolt up to the Hyundai 1.6T in my Elantra GT Sport?

Yesterday I'm driving home thinking how much I like the car but also since it was cold and a little wet and therefore being annoyed by the FWD.  I've continuously lamented the fact that there are no ~200hp, 4 seat, Functional RWD sporty cars.  There are a few premium luxury type cars but nothing like a RWD Mazda 3.  So I'm wondering why couldn't I just rotate my engine 90* and modify the rear suspension to be RWD.  Let's ignore stability and traction control and how freaked out they would get for now (though that likely would be a serious roadblock).  But the first large challenge is transmission.  Google is light on the intricacies of Hyundai bolt patterns.

I don't want 300+HP, I don't want a motor swap.  I just want a ~200hp/~3000lb, RWD, MT, 4 Door Hatchback that gets 30-35 MPG.    I have everything but the RWD sitting in my driveway right now...

Doesn't the 4 banger stinger meet your goals stock?

Edit...  a bit heavier, a bit more go (255) and a bit worse mileage.  Sure would be the easy button.

Or how about an e92 4 door?

I got nothing on the trans info.  Sounds like that could be a fun swap!

The stinger looks like pretty big car. How much does it weigh?

Someone was just posting about manual trans off-lease 2019 G70s in one of the G70 Facebook groups yesterday.....not really an answer to your question.

I haven't found much info in regard to this either. I love the drivetrain in my G70 so naturally I was looking into options for swapping something similar into the RX-8. I didn't spend much time looking but didn't really come up with much.

Adapter plate and a transmission from whatever. At 200 HP a Miata trans will work.

Also..  want 3 pedals and would rather it be a non "premium" car.

I suppose some random BMW is probably the droid but I would love to find a more plebian option.

The Genesis G70 4cyl Manual is near perfect and I will probably just look for a used one of those but 5 door is preffered.

I like the stinger, it's a bit more squat feeling then I want but I would tolerate one if a MT RWD 4cyl was available.  I guess I could look at swapping a MT from a G70 into one.

The IS300 wagon is one of the few I know of but MT versions of those are basically Unicorns.

There is nothing premium about a base-model Subaru Impreza. 2.0L, Flat-4, 5-speed manual, 152-horsepower, available in four or five door versions.

That's fair.  My wife really likes the VX crosstreks.  We had a 6MT outback for 120K miles.  The Crosstreks are for now still available manual trans.  It's possible we wind up with one of those eventually.

I *think* the bolt pattern on the Gamma is the same as the Theta. If so, the Gen Coupe 2.0 trans should bolt up. Those are getting cheap.

Other than the 4-door requirement, you just described the BRZ/86/FRS

Not for me. I can't get comfortable in them.

I agree completely.  That's why they are a realistic possiblity.  I would just prefer something that my kids could actually ride in.

By the time they outgrow the back seat, you might be ready for a new car anyway. When you're that small, even a coupe back seat feels huge.

Cadillac ATS

Available manual, rear drive, horrific resale value, and a damn good chassis. Hits all requirements except hatch.

The turbo Gamma is a decent motor but... if he is going to go through all this trouble, why not just use a modern 2.0 for the extra 50/75/100 hp?

The rack and pinion is right in the middle of where the drivetrain wants to be, so you'd have to re-engineer the whole front suspension and steering.

The firewall is too far forward and the trans tunnel is too low to fit a transmission.  Unfortunately, the HVAC system is using that space on the inside of the car.  Also the pedals.

The axle centerlines are all wrong relative to the chassis, if you want something that doesn't have a weight distribution like an empty pickup.  For decent handling you'd need to move the front and rear axle centerlines forward.

Longitudinal conversions of front drive vehicles, done so that the end result handles okay, end up being a case of removing the whole floor and firewall and starting over from scratch.  Which is why Ford did exactly that when they made the Escort Cosworth - they put the top and sides of an Escort body on the floorpan and firewall of a Sierra.  (Allegedly there were a couple high dollar Focuses done like so for US open-class stage rally - Focus skin on an XR4Ti floorpan, all the AWD bits bolt up to that)

A lot of good points here. It's definitely not a trivial amount of work. Case in point:
