The other day while rifling through an ex-employee's desk, I found a blue and white window sticker that says, "I am a Nigerian made Volkswagen." It's unused -- still has the backing paper on it. I tried to research it w/Google but all I get are hits for Nigerian scams and VWs for sale. The sticker looks old -- maybe '70s or '80s.
Anyway, any VW aficionados out there know why this thing might have ended up here in the U.S.? Were they importing Nigerian-built VWs here at some point and, if so, would this have actually been a fact to be proud of?
Linky
"Other countries produced Beetles from CKD (complete knockdown kits): Ireland, Thailand, Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, and Nigeria have assembled Beetles under license from VW. Brazilian CKD kits (complete knock down) were shipped to Nigeria between 1975-1987 where Beetles were locally produced. The Brazilian-produced versions have been sold in neighboring South American nations bordering Brazil, including Argentina and Peru."
Which sort of boggles the mind, I mean, if Nigerians want to BUY a car in the U.S. and pay MORE for it than it's worth....if you were American and buying a Nigerian built VW, would you ask them to ship the car to you....C.O.D. with the promise to pay when your rich aunt or uncle dies?
