Is any one here from this area? East Greenbush, NY 12061. I really want this truck Tundra
Would I ever be happy long term with a tuck that came from this part of the world. Can a good owner really protect a car from the winter? I am hoping to buy an Tundra and keep it forever, so I want a keeper and am willing to pay for one. This truck looks great, but I know all that takes is some black spray paint.
Thanks guys
It does look absurdly clean...
Judging from the underhood shots, most of the fasteners are still going to be in good nick(ie, not break the first time you have at). As with all the modern Toyotas, the frame rusts FIRST, this one looks decent.
Something from NY(away from the lakes, even) should be ok. The Northern cars you most want to avoid come from eastern Mass. Holy hell.
Looks good, I'd buy it.
Be careful. When I was truck shopping up here in MI, one trick the dealers were using is to spray paint any rust on the chassis black. It looks really good in pictures, but when you see it up close, you can tell they didn't even clean before the paint was applied. In those pictures, there is one where you can see the back side of one of the side steps and it looks rusty. You can also see the color on the under side of the closest frame rail is a bit different than the side.
It does look pretty nice though, but pictures can deceive. At least have someone local check it out.
You can't find one in the south where you don't have to be concerned about rust?

It's had 8 winters of salty roads. I've sworn off of cars that come from north of the Ohio river. Move on, nothing to see here.
Don't do it. Keep shopping. Rust isn't worth it. I bought a 2004 F150 that came from northern KY, and the cab corners have gone from perfect to absent in 14 months.
Simply because it hasn't rusted yet, does not mean it wont. now, if you were to remove most of the under bodys ancilliaries, bead blast everything to bare, undercoat the hell out of it, then re-install everything, maybe.
but thats a load of work for a $12K truck.
Keep lookin

I would agree, frame appears to have been painted. I'd check it close.
The pictures also, to me, don't tell a story of a clean truck, they tell the story of a good detail shop. I'd rather see a vehicle in its "as traded" state than overly detailed like this one. Never know what sins were covered up by a good cleaning.

Dont do it.
The fact that I'm seriously considering spending $800 to ship a $1500 car from NC should give you an idea of how serious the rust problem is up here.
I'm from the South. So far I've been unsuccessful at find a body shop here willing to do rust repair. FWIW.
You could probably spend 2-3k more and get a super clean rust-free truck near you that you wouldn't have to go fetch.
If you look at the rear axle shot at that link, the paint isn't even dry yet. Or it's been recently oiled.
dont.
i lived up there. i live in the south now.
and i still try to find either piedmont NC area cars, or midwestern. least possible rust possibilities.
I have two trucks with rust issues, but then again, I bought them in MI when I lived there. I hate rust, but I deal with it because I own them. To out and buy another, I will spend LESS on a truck here then to get a "rust free" more northern truck. I might have to deal with more miles, but the way they have them screwed together compared to even the much improved mid-80's models, makes the mileage a moot point.

WOW that is 10 people all telling me the same thing. Thanks guys I will let this one go.
You're far bettyer off finding another truck from someplace south of New York.
Just look at the bottom of the step bar in the photo. Where the bar curves there is alot of discoloration and roughness, even in that crappy photo.
Rust has started on the step bars and it's a good indication that the rest of the truck is being attacked by rust as well. Fact of life in road salt country, and New York uses more salt per mile than any other state.
I commuted across the line from PA into NY and there is a line of demarcation formed by a layer or salt on the road in the winter. In wintertime New York roads are white with salt, so much that it always looks like there's a fresh dusting of snow on dry days.
And just one year of exposure is enough to start the rust process. My Ranger had the step bars rust through and require replacement as the first step in the process of destruction by rust.
That was three years ago. Now it's the bed, tailgate, rocker panels and doors that are showing rust through spots and the frame is showing signs that it's going to become a problem. All from one winter of exposure to to New York road salt.
You don't want to go there in a truck that's seen multiple winters of New York road salt.

People up here think that "Florida" cars are the epitome of gracefully weathered vehicles. WRONG!
Piedmont NC area cars are truly, in my personal opinion, the nicest ones I have ever seen.
I almost feel bad bringing them up here. I had a really nice 92 civic hatch that I got from just south of Washington DC. No rust, anywhere. Perfect, flawless. It sat in my driveway in Portland ME for a single winter. Come spring, rust everywhere. I didn't even drive it. Blah.
FWIW, I'm heading south over Christmas to find a truck to replace mine. It was almost rust free when I bought it 2 years ago, and it's a rust bucket now.

Next vehicle I get will be getting hosed down with either fluidfilm or linseed oil before the first salt flies.

You need to find a restoration shop. I'm in the Nashville area and have had zero issues finding good shops to do rust work....including patching a rusty frame.

South Florida CL has 114 Tundras listed. Just saying.
East Greenbush has no redeeming features, and neither will any truck you buy there.
