Last night I bought a Volvo 960 for the sum of $500. I owned this car in 2006 and sold it for $800. I ran into the guy that I sold it to and asked how it was running. He said it runs and drives great but the heater core went completely bad last spring. He was planning to sell it next spring unless I wanted it now.
The first time that i owned the car I used it as a daily driver and never did ant performance modifications. It has a straight 6 and an automatic. Does anyone here have experience with modifiying these?

Yep, the mobile storage just happens to look like a volvo
I think the inline 6 in it is a pretty nice motor. One thing you can do to wake it up a lot is scavenge the turbo components off of an S80 T6 and you end up with a twin turbo I6 RWD wagon. It's not a trivial amount of work though.
Sadly a manual swap is difficult and expensive since the white block motors were never sold in an RWD config with a manual transmission. You can source a manual from Europe ($$$) or get a swap kit (adapter plate, flywheel, throwout bearing, $$$) and use a T5 or T56.
What year is it? The 960 had a solid rear at first and transitioned to independent at some point. They're not terribly common cars but share a lot with the 740/760.

LOL!! See also : keeping the engine well lubricated and maintained during storage.
someone swapped in an LSx into one recently and is selling a kit for the swap...
not sure about the I6 whiteblock but i know the I5 used in the FWD is a nice little engine... just wrong wheel drive... I wouldn't be supprised if there is a way to swap a turbo I5 in... but honestly I don't know
A 960 is the ideal candidate for a Ford V8 of your choice.
I think the turbo I5 would bolt right up to the existing auto transmission and adapting the motor mounts should be easy. There may be other challenges though.
This car has the independent rear suspension. I also have a rusted out Volvo 242 turbo with a manual. Would this make for a good swap? I am also considering the Ford V-8 with a T-5 swap. I am investigating selling the inline 6 and automatic, they command a rather high price on car-parts.com.
ford or chebby v8 swap would be natrual... the manual behind the 242 turbo is weak and well known for munching on themselves quickly... which is why high powered volvo guys either move to a t5 or a GM slushbox... or keep a stock of stock volvo trans on hand and get good at changing them...
a local to me has a nicely priced 5.0/t5 combo that I'd pick up and swap into my 945ti in a heart beat if I didn't have another project taking up all my $$$ and the garage... while you can get some nice power out of the b230 turbo engine its still no pushrod v8... when i'm done with the s10 I think I may go the route of the v8 on the next toy haha
I drove the car 150 miles on saturday morning. It drives well, the transmission shifts a bit rough when climbing hills. The heater is disconnected, but a new heater core, in the box, was included. Some pictures.

Nice, I'm still in the market for a Volvo wagon to replace the Zx2 as a DD.

There are a bunch around here with blown gaskets. the plan is to get a wagon, run it until it dies, then replace engine with a 5.0 from an explorer and use a T5 transmission.
