as much as I like El Caminos and Rancharos... I think if I was going to build a car based prerunner.. it would be station wagon based...

These are not mud trucks and as far as your concern in deep sand paddle tires are used. A Ranger with a 5.0 is a very hard setup to beat, however most Pre-Runners focus on the suspension/safety. Most run the stock engines with minor mods like exhaust. Where do you plan on taking this truck out at? Would this be your 1st trophy truck? Are you capable of doing your own fab work?

I can do light fab work, but I also have some amazing fabricators at my disposal. It would most definitely be my first truck that even comes close to being worthy of the term trophy truck! I need to do some more research about exactly where I'd take it. But up here it would be mostly dunes.

My parents live in Phoenix for half the year, so I am sure I would bring it down there about once a year as well.

What I would like is a truck that I can jump the hell out of, and still drive on the street occasionally. Up in Oregon its a pretty rare sight to see a truck with much more than fiberglass body work, but maybe I didn't know what I was looking for on the trucks I have seen as far as suspension goes.

Forgot about all about paddles tires for trucks, I generally associate paddles with quads/mx bikes but I suppose they do come in all kinds of sizes...

You already have a Ranger, I see no reason not to. :)

I'd like to resurrect this one. I have a 93 4 banger 2wd ranger with I-beam front suspension. I'm considering a long travel prerunner style front suspension upgrade. Anyone here have any suggestions? Of course cheaper is better. The truck is boat loads of fun as-is, but why not make it even cooler? 5.0 swap will happen some day.

Just to answer the questions asked earlier in the thread, go 2WD. Costs are way higher with 4WD and once you have long travel, you can have speed and momentum, nullifying the advantage of 4WD. The balance is better too without the transfer case and front drive axle.
