The Escort/Lynx used a Mazda diesel, and it was even offered in the Tempo. Rangers used a Perkins and a Mazda diesel engine. (I'm not sure the Ranger diesel is the same as the Escort diesel...possibly a different displacement?) In all 3 cases we are talking about engines that produced about 55-60 horsepower.
Toyota didn't just offer a diesel Camry, but also a diesel Corolla, and Nissan didn't just offer a diesel Sentra and pickup, but also offered the Maxima (when it was still RWD) with a diesel.
An jstein, I just moved to Florida, and when the DMV asked about my odometer's reading I noticed at the bottom of the form that you can have EXEMPT noted on the title and in the "records", if your car is MORE than 10 years old. My "examiner" was a bit more diligent than most, and walked out to personally check the odometer.
