I don't really need tires now, but will before next Autocross season. TR has the 615K+(what does the + stand for?) that will work out to about $100 each, plus shipping. Should I go ahead and pull the trigger, or wait until I need tires and see what is out there? 200tw tires generally are >$100

The + is just for the new year, last years were just 615k. I liked mine for the short time I had them. They were last years though. Depending on the size TR had a 70$ rebate for RE71Rs as well.

The 'stones are not available in the size I need. So the + means it is this year's upgraded compound.

New compound, smoking deal of a price, want is increasing to irresistible levels.

I bought a set for the Miata for the same exact reason. My Z2's still have about a 1/2 season left, but just couldn't pass on the price.

EDIT: Still waiting on the rebate, though. Then they go from a pretty good deal to an absolute steal. The Miata donuts were less than $70 a corner.

They did the same thing to me last year with RE71Rs. I was just pricing them out and then saw they were having a sale and grabbed a set then and there.

And here I am wondering why there isn't a Tire Rack ad at the top of this page so I can click it and give GRM some credit...

UGH I already have 3 sets of tires for my NA (AD08, BFGSportComp2, and winters).

I don't have a problem, right?

Sounds good to me. I've got 3 sets for the Jeep and occasionally contemplate a 4th (even though one of the 3 sets will age out long before wearing out). One set is grooved Dynapro M/Ts, another is the Hakka R2s for winter, 3rd set is the street summers (Eagle F1 Asymmetric).

Which reminds me, I should be watching for sales on a new set of summers for that thing, I'm not sure the current ones will survive this whole summer despite being new a year ago...

Now that's something I've never seen. Summer, Winter, AND mud terrains!

I love it when people appreciate good tires. The duratracs on my Xterra were incredible on/off road tires, but snow performance did not approach proper snow tires.

In reply to Blaise:

The M/Ts only go on when I need them (rallycross when it's too warm for the snows, etc.). I drove it on the street with them on once... It was awful. Even gently rolling into the throttle I couldn't get to half throttle in 1st without wheelspin on dry pavement...

Generally tires with a lot of void space aren't actually putting as much rubber on the road for their size as you would think. And long wear is highly valued in off road rubber for whatever reason, probably because they cost so much in the first place.

Damn, how do these compare to the ZII star specs? Might have to snag some myself

Exactly. 225s with tons of void area aren't exactly grippy. They are softer than a lot of M/Ts, but still the hardest compound of all of my tires, I think.

I wish they made them in a 944-friendly size, but I can say that about pretty much every tire on the market these days.

Current rumor is its pretty much the same compound, different tread design. Rumor possibly supported by the fact that Dunlop and Falken appear to be under the same large company umbrella. See: tire company family tree doesn't branch. Seems like they have a uncle/cousin/brother thing going on corporately.

If you like going slower than your competitors on the Stones or Rivals, then yes, these are the tires for you.

If the 'stones or Rivals were available in the size I am after, you would have a strong point. ZII Star Specs for $70 more or the AD08R for $95 more each are my other options, so yeah, the Falkens look pretty darn good, and I have plenty of room to store them.

out of curiosity, what size do you need?

215-40-17. I guess I could go 205's, but it rides so much better on 215's

Just checked, range of choices is no better, nanotech formulated compound, oooh, that must be better

Falken Website said: The PLUS encompasses an all-new digitally-engineered, nanotech-formulated compound for superior grip and excellent handling.

So I talked to a guy today who is running the 615K+ and ran the old compound 615K last year. He reported the new compound is significantly better than last year, picked up about a second and a half running cones.

That makes sense, the old 615k was not exactly the tire to beat.

I will say that the old set that I absolutely abused the crap out of on our old miata were a riot to throw into a corner.

Sent the thing off for the rebate today. We will see how long it takes. This set is going to work out about the same price as the Kumho LE Sport tires it has on it now. Good tires, not great tires. Going from 280tw to 200tw should be a pretty big jump in smiles per mile
