I was just looking at a car-apparel site, and they clearly live in a different world than GRMers. In their old/discontinued items, they have a a miata shirt. The description reads
Loved by few and hated by many, the Miata is always a hot topic with enthusiasts.
who hates miatas? It can't be the hellaflushers....
i wouldn't say that i "hate" them... i just don't "get" them...
Inexpensive, rwd, manual, good aftermarket (including forced induction and LSx swaps), plentiful.
What's to hate?
The guys who hate them are most likely the guys that use their vehicle as a phallus extension. You don't have to love em... But HATE em?
Meh.
I'm with novaderrik on this one. The best one word, that sums them up for me is, uninspiring.

small, cramped, dorky looking, stupid grinning grille...
i know it's hard to believe, but not everyone likes the same things...
In reply to novaderrik:
I'll just add that if one has enough time and energy to actually HATE an inanimate object, one might aim toward getting a life!
But as I already clearly stated above, "you don't have to love 'em... But HATE 'em?" That's just childish.
I see the word "uninspiring". I get that completely! But IIRC, the original post went something like "loved by few HATED by many". If the line had said "uninspiring" then we have a discussion!

apparently "hyperbole" isn't a word that is in your vocabulary...
also, people like thinking that they- or something they like/love- is "hated" by others. it makes them feel like a rebel, like they are special, unique, different than the masses. hence a description of a shirt like the one in the OP- the people that would buy such a shirt are proud that they like something that other people don't, and think that it makes them somehow more badass than they really are for having the balls to like something that most other people don't.
Miata is not that cramped. Its just the getting in and out of that sux. Which can be said for much larger cars as well....
ive found most of the kids who "hate" them have never actually raced one.
I think a more accurate line would be, "mocked by many, loved by few".
I converted quite a few of the domestic folks back when I owned my supercharged 95.

I think the most accurate description would be, loved by many, misunderstood by some.

FWIW, I've never owned one, but I recognize that they are competent race cars, and they are inexpensive. I don't see any negatives. The ones I have driven were easy to control when the rear end stepped out (and I'm used to FWD) and - unlike the evo I drove - never made me think they were trying to kill me.
My buddy was looking for a fun sporty car. I suggested Miata.
He told me they're a gay mans car.

I tell them I agree completely. I tell them that if they get a miata they will gravitate toward show tunes and such. Then there are more cool cars for us.
I'm working on spreading the rumor that the C7 'vette is for lesbians. I want to afford one in 15 years.

I'm one that doesn't like Miata's ... but that's 'cause I race against them ... actually that's a good thing (competition is good) .. the main reason .... I detest riding in, driving convertibles
I too dislike convertibles.
That's why I got a hardtop.
