I am rebuilding the shifter on Ransoms E28. I placed an order for all the necessary bits and got to work. All seemed well until I realized the selector rod was really worn on the rod joint side which is a metal to metal joint. I opted to just repair it.
Rod with 10mm donor stock
bolt head turned down, shortened and groove cut for retainer
old pin cut off, new one welded on. I went ahead and zinc plated it too!
All new bushings and wear items ready to go. Now I just need to install it. Someone was using the lift today so that will have to wait til tomorrow.
ok.. I am way beyond impressed on your abilities

I know, right? Freaking grade 8 bolt turned into a BMW shifter for lulz. I'm flabbergasted.
Done the same to fix the similar condition on 944 shifters except instead of the c clip I use two thin nuts to lock against each other and a spring washer to keep tension on things.
link to my page. Did this back in 08 and it is still good as new

In reply to dean1484:
I added 10mm thrust bearings to mine to take the load off the shaft so that the wear won't happen again. $5 on Amazon and happy happy shifting.
I bought a replacement for my Mustang.
Actually typed the order into Amazon myself.
MAN are my fingers tired ! ! ! ! Gotta take a break from all of this work . . .
Ya I wish I knew someone like you near me, lol
i would have just removed the old stud, drilled a hole, welded a bolt in place, and double nutted it in place.
but i guess your way works, too..
How do you DIY zinc plating??

I don't.. . . I apply some grease (I use the stuff for CV joints in this application) and it never rusts. In my case if it starts to rust I have MUCH bigger issues.

have you priced out a Porsche shifter?

Mine has been customized to accept a Dino shift knob that is shorter than stock. If you look close in the photos on my page you will see a large grade 8 bolt welded where the standard flat stamped metal should be.
So in my case it would have been more work and cost a lot more to get a new shifter. I think it was all of $1.00 in parts that I had lying around anyway and about 15 min of my time.
I welded FC rx7 threads onto my rx8 shifter so I could use my wood shift knob with the new trans but mine looks nothing fancy like that..
